Just politically speaking it’s a bad move. Giving less people less money than Trump is just asking for Trump 2024.

My immediate thought after they changed the amount and every news outlet all agreed he meant 1400 when he said 2000, was that the midterms are guaranteed to be a blowout against them.

Tbh I don’t think it matters, the fact so much voter suppression legislation is going through is damning them in the midterms and 2024 anyway.

Forget about her little stunt yesterday, Sinema was doomed to losing her reelection the moment she refused to support abolishing the filibuster and passing the John Lewis voting rights act. It’s literally a matter of political life and death for Democrats from states with red governments, and they're just shrugging and saying “guess I’ll die for norms”.

At least the last vestige of the farce that is American democracy will finally die.

My father says that the the understanding was that $2,000 total would be given out.

When I pointed out that they said $2,000 checks would go out, I was told that things can change and compromises may be made.

Of course, if I say that the Democrats control Congress and the Presidency, he says that some Democrats need to be compromised with.

Finally, when I point out the party could do more to get the holdouts on their side (such as threatening to primary them), my father says that it would not be the right thing to do.

At one point, he said that I was sounding like "that crazy woman from New York" (AOC). He didn't have much of a response when I pointed out that, if she got her way, we would have more benefitted.

Don't allow them to change the argument. Once you get to "things can change" you nail it down. "So they did change it. And if we have to do these kind of mental gymnastics to justify it, it means they didn't want to address it."

My :LIB: relatives have somehow gaslit themselves into believing it was always $1400 despite me sending them links to news articles from January promising $2000 checks. They make me feel like ripping off my own face :agony-turbo: Maybe I'll share some fb screenshots so y'all can share my pain

I don't know a ton of die hard Dem voters. The two I do both lead with "I still can't believe they haven't sent out checks yet" when I see them.

So idk how hard it's been manufactured.

It's not even gaslighting — fucking libs gaslight themselves on their own initiative. I can only conclude that to be lib is to humbly submit yourself to a hierarchy, to think that you aren't smart enough to have an opinion and must trust your leaders, else you be too "cynical" and "divisive."

    :liberalism:

the longer they wait, the less it matters. $1.4k will seem like a blessing despite how little it is. No one dares broach the topic of monthly payments which we should have demanded all along.

Reminds of an internet friend of mine, and via Instagram I know supported Bernie, after he lost then said "actually Biden has the most progressive platform ever!," then says that Texans hurt by the freeze should just remember to :vote: when the next election is- that'll stop this right away!‐ and most recently shared that is was always going to be $1400! 1400 + 600 = 2000, dummy! They never promised $2000, where'd you get that??

It's interesting and sad watching 'progressives' be 'progressive.'

It's useful for differentiating between Bernie Democrats and conservative Democrats, at least to people who reflexively punch out as soon as you use the "s" word.

Texans hurt by the freeze should just remember to Vote

Texas politicians will leverage the chaos and destruction wrought by the storm to deny people enfranchisement in two years.

Gonna have to disagree here; this was always the plan, and anything more wonkish than a soundbite made it clear that this was always the plan, and frankly I'm surprised that people here are going down the "they lied" route than the much more fruitful "democrats are unable to speak without several implicit conditional clauses appended".

“democrats are unable to speak without several implicit conditional clauses appended”.

they knew how the sound bites would be interpreted and made no effort to prevent them being widely misinterpreted because it was advantageous to them.

      in other words they lied

If you say so, but from the last 4 years of fact-checking Trump, I don't think that's even a meaningful observation to make, even if you could get to the point where you clear the semantic quagmire of whether or not they were intentionally misleading or simplifying for the sake of brevity (does someone who gets a $2000 direct deposit get to say they lied about being sent a $2000 check?). Which you can't.

Instead, point out the unchallengable observation that the people deciding on these things are robots so fare removed from the lives of ordinary people that the can't possibly advocate for them, and instead busy themselves with arcane means tested and conditional games.

This is something that has already been realized by the average person and led them to apathy rather than radicalization.. "where's your $2000 check?" speaks directly to someone's material interests and might at least make them less apathetic.

I don't really buy that; all the people I know that are living paycheck to paycheck are just happy to get any breathing room.

They're not exactly grateful to the Dem's but they're also not scornful of the amount.

Nah, I think there's a distinction. Accusing them of "lying" gives the horde of "well actually" types the opportunity to jump in with Snopes articles and more detailed contemporary write-ups to go on and on about how they weren't lying.

The second approach cuts right through that issue.

Lib thoughts here: Democrats give $1400, Republicans want to give $0.

Sure, they're off the $2k by 30%, but with the alternative being $0, it's better than nothing.

        trump gave people $1800

Yeah, but what has he done for me lately?

Might as well talk about all the money Obama gave you, to defend Democrats. No voter is doing that math.

What matters isn't the size of the check but the relative trustworthiness of the politicians. Promising $2000 and delivering $1400 (or less) will be easy to spin as betrayal.

The constant need to compromise away on your campaign platform is what dried up support for Democrats in 2010.

Hopefully, this time, leftists can leverage the disgust as efficiently as Republicans did.
