Comrades,
I'm fairly new to this socialist thing. I've read some of the basics and checked out lectures from people like Parenti.
Who are some "major" modern socialists? I'm only aware of Richard Wolf.
Thanks,
His most recent book is good too! A history of US sponsored coups, antidemocratic actions, etc
Yanis Varoufakis is pretty good if you want something theoretical from a Marxist with experience in the most senior level of European politics.
Owen Jones is a very good writer if you want to understand TERF isle left and working class over the past few years but he can be a bit of a succ dem sometimes.
I would be carefull with varufakis. As a Greek: Some very good economic insights and demsocism but danger of infestation by eurocommunist brainworms and ideas the failed european left threw in the garbage for decades now
Could you elaborate what ideas were those? I listen to a few of his talks and yeah he does have a lib streak but I'd like to hear specifics.
I'm also interested to know, since I've grown to like him a lot
I remember when Syriza was all the rage and Varoufakis was in the spotlight, I soured on them quickly when Varoufakis didn't think the left was capable of a revolution, so just do soc dem stuff, yeah eurocommunism is still a cancer.
David Harvey is basically Marx reincarnated, he has books, lectures and is still going strong with a podcast.
His series on Das Kapital is incredible. He has some great short vids on modern colonialism through financial structures, and I'm currently reading Rebel Cities which is fire.
He doesn't get enough love imo
I'll +1 Yanis Varoufakis.
Really though -- Anything written by the vanguard parties worth following. Red Fightback in particular as they're writing fantastic theory following in the steps of the old movements right now, but PSL are worth it too.
As part of this struggle we are dedicated to fighting against:
- Imperialism
- Opportunism
- Oppressive structures that emerge from class and sustain class society, such as race and gender
- The environmental crisis.
The phrasing in one of these bullet points is the result of months of intense struggle sessions. Can you guess which one?
(I'm not trying to start shit, I don't know anything about the org, I just think this is funny.)
Rofl. Yeah the language is very carefully chosen. Good org btw, the only org in the UK worth paying any attention to. They're growing fast and they really fucking deserve it. Not a member, will be when I've done what I want to do in NIP though.
Check out https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_%C3%96calan , the man behind the theory of Rojava and its Democratic Confederalism
Peter Frase wrote a short, easy, but insightful book called After Capitalism: Four Futures that he calls speculative social fiction and discusses thing like climate change, automation and more in a Marxist but lib-friendly way. Might be a bit basic but it's enjoyable and a good book to shift people left I've found.
