She attempted to bring up how the officers turning on Derek Chauvin shows that theres some good officers and I was having none of it. She's an extremely lib journalist and It was like talking with a wall. My boomer dad also backed her up. When I brought up how often police are abusers and such she said that the presidency is also corrupt and so is congress. Should they be torn down? I said yes and she said well that doesn't lead to a stable world when china and russia wanna swoop in and put gulags here. I was at this point so annoyed I just told her to look up imperialism, how capitalism exploits the global south, and how the united states has not enabled stability for any country that's not an ally of the united states' ruling class. Anyone have any tips on how I could have maybe radicalized her? I'm grasping at straws at this point and my family will probably make me out to be the villain.

How many police were present when Geroge Floyd was murdered? Wasn't it like three?

That's why All Cops Are Bad. There were three of them there. At any time, the other two could have pulled Chauvin off of Floyd. They chose not to.

Nobody turned on Chauvin when it mattered. So what, a few police had a guilty conscious and testified or something doesn't matter one damn bit. George Floyd is still dead. Still murdered by a person in uniform, given authority and a license to carry out violence.

She kept saying it showed that the blue line was cracking. When I said that its only because the camera was on the case more than most others and that it was entirely to placate people calling for defunding and abolishing the police, she said it didnt matter. "As long as they do the right thing, who cares if it's for the wrong reasons" - my sister. :angery:

but they did the wrong thing for the wrong reasons and have convinced themselves they're at war with the people they work for

“As long as they do the right thing, who cares if it’s for the wrong reasons” - my sister

This is a real "A moment doesn't make a movement" moment.

She knows that the people who "cracked" were low level nobodies right? If it were a police union or an entire cadre of high ranking police officials, maybe it would be a sign of things changing. As it is, two low level nobodies aren't a sign of systemic change.

I think we’re always going to struggle with these people until there are more successful alternative programs like in Denver. Libs have no imagination, and we have to put forth more than just ACAB to get through to them, because in their mind, who comes to help if I flip my car... etc

but surely if I was able to understand this stuff, my sister who is much more academically accomplished than me would be able to even more.

Not necessarily, your level of education has nothing to do with how smart you are

This exactly. Police abolition and defunding aren't easy to point to examples like free healthcare or better public transit. There are very few real world examples (that I know of at least).

America has the biggest gulags, with the most people, incarcerated for the dumbest and most evil reasons, in all of world history.

For every Derek Chauvin who chokes a man, there's a dozen Tou Thaos who will keep the crowds back so they can only watch the man die. Everycop who's not an abuser is a conformist.

I said yes and she said well that doesn’t lead to a stable world when china and russia wanna swoop in and put gulags here.

Maybe next time they bring this up, ask them how close they are to doing that.

Ask them where the closest Chinese military base to American soil is, and how many miles away from the border it is.

You don't change people's minds by trotting out arguments. But when you get the gears in their heads to start turning and slipping and jamming, you can really erode their beliefs. That's why it's such a well-known interviewer tactic of just getting them to keep talking- if there's a contradiction that they carry in their argument, sooner or later they'll run right into it, and they'll be the critic rather than you.

So her argument was that all cops can't be bastards because the government is corrupt? Even though the primary purpose of cops is to enforce the rules of a government that she recognizes as corrupt?

Every person who posts a play-by-play how they failed when arguing with a family member gets their name added to a list.

And that list is saved on my NAS as "Cringe.txt"

Honestly I think it's helpful. Nobody knows the best route to talking to libs, but if we share our experiences then we can learn are good strategies, what works, what doesn't, and when is the best strategy to just take a break.

basically explain to her that by her making excuses for them she's directly contributing to the continuation of the abuse and murder of minorities. that the police serve to protect property and she's therefore a bootlicker, just like you would tell any dumb lib on reddit or someone who isn't your sister. if it doesn't get through, it doesn't get through, but next time it happens, and the time after that, one day it might click. you have to be blunt with these people.

I prefer to argue from the angle that Capitalism / the law is bad, and cops choose to uphold Capitalism / the law.

Too much all at once. You need to start slow. Also, "being ironic" is one of the most powerful tools we have.
