I've found a few random articles about it like a USA Today one but it wasn't very good. I'm assuming it's all because Mexico has an actual independence day they prefer to celebrate over this? Also feels like it was at one point, an actual celebration but has just become like every single other holiday and just commodified as shit? I see that Puebla, Mexico does sorta celebrate it at least

Basically big beer companies like Modelo and Corona co-opted the date as a marketing scheme to sell more beer in the late 80s/early 90s in the states. It worked so here we are today.

gotcha. yeah it feels like that but it was kinda hard to find legit critiques of it, especially right now where there is thousands of news articles talking about the holiday today. I was curious because it looked like was actually celebrated a long time ago here as an act of defiance i guess, but then i guess it stopped. And after many years it would make sense those beer companies and shit like Del Taco and Taco Bell would use it to capitalize on a day for advertising

pretty sure it has roots in the american chicano rights movement and was then picked up by alcohol companies as an easy holiday to market.

because for mexican-americans its their cultural pride day like how the irish have saint patricks day, and like the irish one it got super commercialised by companies to sell more stuff

here in Mexico its just another day, Benito Jaurez birthday is more celebrated than his victory over the Empire

lmao I love being asked if I'm going to celebrate that and Day of the Dead, because all Latin Americans treat those days like religious holidays

A 2018 survey by NationalToday.com showed only 10% of Americans knew the true reason behind the holiday

genuinely shocked that the percentage is so high

Mexican Independence Day is September 16 for those that don't know. Cinco is just an excuse for white people to get drunk, really.
