It's really weird how angry the article is about Shrek...
Also:
The grownups in the room can snicker knowingly at Farquaad’s name and the repeated references to his penis size while the kids are left with fart jokes and the wanton diminishment of timeless characters and stories
These "timeless characters and stories" fucking suck. Well, they don't suck necessarily but they're not "timeless" because they are so great, but just because it's what people know. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing things with them.
Also the animation was genuinely great for its time.
Shrek works because the fairytales were trite garbage after existing for hundreds of years.
Shrek is basically an inversion of the idea that good people have to be the conventional idea of a hero.
I think fairytales are good for kids and their development but at some point they've got to watch Shrek.
Most of the fairy tales in Shrek had already been Disneyfied. They were mocking the Disney versions of source material that's actually very dark. Which is kinda done in Shrek, but in a humorous way.
Since when though? And Shrek was genuinely ostracised from society. The closest that comes to that is Wreck-It Ralph which was years after Shrek.
Alladin, Hercules, Pinocchio, The Sword in the Stone...it's a pretty normal heroes journey trope.
I don't think they quite work the same way.
All the heroes in those stories win by escaping the situation they were in. Shrek actually embraces his ogreness rather than rejecting it.
He learns to accept help from other people and how to make friends and be less ogre-esque. He was still changed by the experience. If it were subversive the movie would end right before the Hallelujah montage except Shrek is totally content.
wait is the reviewer unironically mad that shrek made fun of fairy tales
The Guardian published this and fired Nathan J Robinson for a tweet criticizing US’s funding of Israel’s military.
There were a lot of problems with Shrek, the animation was not one if them. At the time the cgi was pretty impressive.
Yeah, not having 2021 level technology in 2001 is a bit of a weird criticism to make.
What do they think of Toy Story's animation, I wonder...
I broadly agree with this. Before Shrek, there were some kids movies that would insert a more adult joke or two into the movie. A little nod to the parents watching, that's all.
But then Shrek comes along and completely bulldozes any of that subtlety. Can't tell if it's a kids movie that pretends to be an adult movie, or the other way around. It's not even that I'm "offended" by the adult jokes or anything. It's just they're not actually funny in and of themselves. Their humor is supposed to be in "oh ho we're not supposed to tell THIS kind of joke in a kids movie! We're so naughty aren't we!" and after the 50th adult reference it gets a bit old.
but its toilet humour, glibness and shoddy animation mark it out as a misfire
The fuck did you just say
Shrek is good, if only for the existence of Shrek:Retold, which is arguably one of the greatest Yotube collaborations of all time
But it's not just good because of that.
The same thing was done with RoboCop and it was better. We don't need Shrek
What a lib. How can the RoboCop one be better if it doesn't have the HotDad remix of 'I'm a Believer'? A whole 80's movie and they couldn't get a neo-80's synthwave band to redo the the theme. Are they even really trying?
tbh I rewatched this around the time of the shrekland bit and didn't find it funny at all.
If you're arguing that something having a message board makes it good then you haven't been online much.
Eddie Murphy was almost in Star Trek 4 but there was a scheduling conflict
Star Trek V is only good because it has the line "Jim, you don't ask the almighty for his ID"
It genuinely is. It sucks so hard, but it's also kind of trying to doing something interesting so I give it a pass.
It's also got some good Kirk-Spock-Bones banter, and the scene where they confront their fears is genuinely really good.
I also like the way it deals with God in the film. Or at least what was claiming to be God for power and control.
They’re closing the comments early because it’s full of angry shrek fans lol
:sicko-yes:
