Before joining Vox, Alex was an associate director in the Atlantic Council's Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security where he worked on military issues
I love how the media takes away agency from third world countries. The Pakistani Prime Minister cannot independently make the decision that strengthening Chinese relations would be beneficial, nope, he was bribed
Pakistan: 0 Chinese bases
Japan: 100+ US basesConclusion: Chinese allies are so because of their own accord, US allies are hostages
Isn't this just projection about what the US does with allies over Palestine?
Anglos are terrified of not being able to live off the spoils of imperialism.
the bad corrupt Muslim countries are all bribed and bought by China, only the noble and brave western countries can stand up for human rights!
"Actually it's only the leaders of those countries that support it. The people, not so much" Source: ass
Yes lending billions of dollars for infastructure improvements is "bribing leaders". Lobbying though? That's democracy.
China is even lending at significantly under the IMFs rate to undercut their debt trap cycle and frequently fully forgiving a country’s debt entirely.
Here's the interview the article centres on it's hilarious how obviously the interviewer Johnathan Swan comes in with the Uyghur angle. Swan reeks of arrogance here.
Khan starts off by touching on how ideology around terrorism became even moreso anti-Muslim after 9/11 . Swan replies: Speaking of islamophobia, in Xinjiang Muslims are forcibly sterilised, can't name their kids Muslim names, are turned into Nike shoes, can't buy Coca Cola and read Politico/watch MSNBC. According to him the "Evidence is overwhelming". In fact, so overwhelming that a source isn't given anywhere.
"We have a rules based system here in the west - how can you accuse Democratic Western Countries of islamophobia, when Mr. Jinping is forcibly forcing an authoritarianism over there?" Pathetic attempt for a gotcha! moment on Khan that's only further exposed when Khan brings up Kashmir.
Notice how the interviewer uses the newly coined US catchphrase "rules-based order" too.
The US loves rule-based order so much that it starts wars of aggression without being subjected to international sanctions and expulsion from the UN, unilaterally and illegally sanctions poor countries that don't bow to them, excluded itself from ever being targeted by the ICC and by preventing genocides that it supports from being investigated in the UN.
They're not barbarians, they wouldn't just invade the Netherlands to break war criminals out of jail without doing the proper paperwork first.
The Act ensures they never have to. It is sufficient to simply threaten. Like waving a gun in a guy's face and saying "Don't bother calling for help".
Drinking game: go to the Atlantic Council's report on Chinese containment strategy (or any of their publications) and ctrl-f "rules-based". Take a shot for every entry.
Whitey has 3x as much wealth and land as China
but somehow China is buying their bribery
Whitey is spread thin, and the West's wealth doesn't spend like it used to. This is terribly unfair.
After the end of the USSR, despite being a steadfast ally of the West, the US et al ignored Pakistan. Pakistan hasn't forgotten
That point about the Sri Lankan port was so bullshit that The Atlantic had to write an article about it
The western countries are famously known for their acceptance of islam and anti-islamophobia.
Traditional rival of India allies with traditional rival of India because India is going full Nazi and there are strong economic and social benefits.
West "Must be bribes, only explaination"
“Maybe I’m out of touch? No, it's every Muslim country on earth who is wrong.”
