This is shaping up to be the thing right wing nuts get outraged about this upcoming week. I feel like this is a good litmus test… anyone who gets angry about this is probably way more of a white nationalist than they are letting on. You think these same people who be angry about a blue/white/orange tricolor, saying it’s too close to the Dutch flag?

The original tweet is not even correct in any way. Ilhan Omar is not from Puntland, she's from Mogadishu. Her father is from the area of Puntland. But Puntland didn't even exist on a map until 1998 - when Ilhan Omar was 17 years old. No one in her family, including her, ever lived in a place called "Puntland." Her father was basically from the area that became Puntland, but never lived in it at any time it was referred to as "Puntland."

Furthermore, the Puntland flag is from 2009 - 14 years after Ilhan Omar's family was in the United States. Not even her father has any ties to that flag, its extremely modern. Chuds will just find anything to get worked up over.

edit: Puntland didn't even exist until 3 years after Ilhan Omar's family was in the United States

edit 2: furthermore, I'd love to see EndWokeness' source for "largest Somali population in the west" because I don't think that's true either. I'm pretty sure London has more Somali people than Minnesota.

that's cool I didn't know they were getting rid of the shitty old racism one.

    Mostly performative, but still cool.

I do dislike this trend towards minimalism in flags, though. Flags should have weapons and fantasy animals and weird symbolism. There was an alternative proposal that I think was like a loon firing laser beams at Wisconsin from its eyes or something.

Edit: The flag should have just said "HA HA FUCK YOU VIRGINIA WE'VE STILL GOT YOUR FLAG" in comic sans.

As outlined in the Constitution of Angola, the red half of the flag signifies bloodshed – during Angola's colonial period, independence struggle, and in defense of the country. The black half symbolizes Africa. In the central emblem, the gear represents industrial workers and production, the machete represents peasantry, agricultural production and the armed struggle, and the star, shaped like the red star, symbolizes international solidarity and progress. The yellow color of the emblem symbolizes the country's wealth.

      deng-cowboy revisionism:

The Constitution of 1975 described the red stripe as symbolizing bloodshed during the colonial period, national liberation and a revolution – and reference to revolution was replaced with "defense of the country" in the constitution of 1992. In other changes of wording between the 1975 and 1992 versions, the star was changed from a symbol of "internationalism" to "international solidarity", and references to "working class" and "peasant class" were replaced with "workers" and "peasants"

    Old flag is so ugly

First off it's way too busy, at a distance it doesn't look like anything

    Second, racist as hell

    Third, not symmetrical

Just awful, one of the worst flags I've ever seen

Yeah, that first one is classic US state flag design, incomprehensible and fails at everything a flag is supposed to do. The new one works quite well as a flag.

I think the new one is… fine. An improvement. But it’s still more of just stars and tricolors.

Yeah, it's functional, that's how I'd describe it. If it were a country's flag I would not be able to remember which country 5 minutes after I saw it.

Meaning three bars arranged either horizontally or vertically, like most euro flags.

Yeah Palestine's flag and the Sahrawi flag are both tricolors despite having a similar triangle of a different color on one side. Same reason the Philippines is bicolor despite its triangle

Something tells me the people who have a problem with this wouldn’t have a problem with a flag that acknowledges the Norwegian or Swedish settlers who were there.

Yeah, even if this were true--which it almost certainly isn't--how is this a problem (or "woke")? The state flag design paying homage to something demographically unique about the state seems pretty reasonable to me.

Why do reactionaries get so damn mad about flags being changed? Are they just so reactionary that literally any change at all sends them into a frothing at the mouth rage? Do they go to Starbucks and order a coffee and just blow up at the cashier when they say "here's your change."?

They've been whipped into a frenzy, believing that there is a plot against them where the evil people seek to literally kill them and everything they hold dear in life (meaning, a life like in a 1950s sitcom). Every change is seen as a means to that end and they keep getting angrier.

Especially since neoliberalism encourages many of the things they're deathly afraid of (for example "open borders [at least in the propaganda they use] and immigration are good because people are not getting enough children and we need people to come work for us" or "We need to make sure Ukraine wins for the sake of human rights. For that we must all suffer a bit economically, [as Russian trade is cut off and cheap workforce and companies from Ukraine flood the EU market]")

Meanwhile socialism is both discredited by propaganda (making it universally agreed on that it is bad for the nation - something both libs and Fascists hold dear), and appears eternally split on what the right considers the most important questions.

Those are horrible times. The libs either agree with the chuds with a "Yes, but you're bad people" (I saw a debate recently between a far-right politician and a former government minister from the 80s, and when the lib said the AfD wanted to deport immigrants - he replied that that's exactly what the Scholz government was supporting.) and only disagree on the basis of foreign policy. Meanwhile socialists are still dead, and by the natural attrition of time, we only get less each year.

this is so much better than the winning submission that they based it on. i was curious about the motivation of the person who created it so did a little digging. Original submission that was selected was White/Green/Blue with a nato star.

it doesn't take a lot of work to improve upon state level flags in the US. They're notoriously bad. They're mostly blue fields with a central seal that's too busy. Virginia's gets a pass as tolerable though because it depicts a lady killing a dude.

fun fact, Oklahoma's state flag had to get changed in 1925 because its previous design (a red field with a star in the center) made everyone think Oklahoma was communist

Real talk though that flag is ugly. I would be so happy and excited for states finally replacing their dumb state-seal-on-a-background flags if the replacements weren’t so God awful.

That’s not even the flag. This is the template flag they selected. They might go with a variant of it which that flag is one of many possibilities, but they’ll probably just end up going with the template.
