I feel like they should have made the Harkonen attack bigger and ended it there, plus built up the fued betwen the houses more. It seemed to last like 3 scenes and everything after was a drag. Also the Baron should be camp as tits monologuing constantly or he isn't the Baron. The dude was like a bad Marlon Brando in Apocolypse Now impression. The whole thing was far too dreary. Caladan was dreary, Arrakis was dreary. I liked that they didn't shy away from the relgious aspects but it was cowardly not to use the word Jihad. They should have explained a bit more about the world like Mentats and the Shields and Lasguns and absolute importance of spice and the guilds monopoly. I could follow along but it needed stating for the wider audience.

I did like how fascist they made the Atriedies look though and Leto was perfect. Jessica was great too I wanted more of her they shouldn't have cut the sub plot about her possibly being a traitor. Paul was there, he was fine but I think the actor will stuggle big time next film. Duncan was not how I pictured him Mamoa is far too cool for a square like Idaho but I did enjoy his performance. They could have a made more of the Paul and Chani meeting since it was built up from the first scene and then when they do meet it's kind of nothing.

Sandworms were excellent both phallic and sphincteric. :chefs-kiss:

I agree with your points, I would also add that the threat to the emperor from the Atreides was not well established. They were building an army to rival the Sardaukar, the raid on the spice stores of Giedi Prime would have been cool to see on screen, would also have made the Harkonnen victory on Arrakis more shocking.

Yes! That's it! I was racking my brain trying to understand why I didn't care for the Baron. You nailed it!

How do you guys remember things you read a decade ago? I read this shit when I was, like, 12 and I can barely remember the characters or the plot.

I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the books and the Lynch version of the film. I kept re-watching some scenes because they were so interesting. I already said this in another thread but I wish more effort was put into making the story feel like it had naturally concluded or at least was at a resting point, because the end felt sudden. I guess putting all the eggs in the "we will definitely do part 2" basket, hope they do.

Am I crazy to think that David Lynch's Dune was better? I just feel like shit was explained better and he still managed to deliver a complete story in about the same runtime.

Yeah, I haven't watched it in a long time but I do think you're right. The new Dune felt a lot more mysterious, and my understanding relied heavily on having read the books multiple times when I was a kid.

    Harka-nins? Har-CONE-nens, dammit! Harka-nins sounds super lame.

Baron Harkonnen wasn't fat enough, or evil enough. He's a depraved sensualist who murders little boys for sexual kicks. We don't actually see him doing anything evil. Other than plotting against Atreides, and how do we even know they're the good guys? Atriedes are by all appearances total fascists.

I think it was cool how Atreides had his mom with him the entire film and her actually being important to the plot, since there's definitely a tendency for genre fiction to make dads the important parent and not really care about relationships between mother and son.

Kinda weird how his mom looks like she's 5-10 years older than him though.

I liked the aesthetics (especially the mosquito-copters) and it was well produced but I found the plot kinda meh. I haven't read the books so I don't know how faithful it was or how much was cut. Though I did like how it mixed some fantasy in with the sci-fi. Bit disappointing that the guy didn't get his princess at the end

Saw it last night, thought it was fantastic, if a bit rushed, which is understandable due to the medium. The set design and costuming was on point! It’s one of those books that I’d always hoped to see on the screen done correctly.

    Still waiting for Neuromancer, though.

I wanna check out Dune but I also kind of enjoy not knowing much about it so when people talk about it it sounds like gibberish

I was a little disappointed at their interpretation of Jessica. In the book she comes across as one of the most competent characters and acts very composed, but she’s nervous and sobbing in a lot of her scenes in the movie. I thought it was great overall though.

I think it was a rare example in this era of “CGI done well.” The epic fight scenes and effects built off a strong film. Stillshit >> CapeShit.

Does anyone else feel like Yueh wasnt fleshed out enough in the movie? I was a bit disappointed they didn’t include the scene of Yurh giving Paul the Orange Catholic Bible but I guess I’m a bit of a lore head so it wasn’t entirely necessary to the plot. Also bummed they didn’t do the dinner scene that really highlighted all the crooks and power brokers on the Arrakis but I can understand why they didn’t include that.

It would take a full season of a TV show to really nail the growing sense of paranoia and guilt among all of the characters in the first portion of the book.

As someone whose only exposure to dune before seeing this movie was references on the internet, I had little idea who this guy was and when his betrayal was revealed my reaction was "oh huh that guy ok I guess"

I get the feeling it was more impactful in the book?

I liked it, doubt I would've liked it if I hadn't read the books. Lotta background you just didn't get on screen. Reminded me of the Martian in that respect. Probably would've been better as a game of thrones style series

I liked it a lot but I think my having read the book contributes to this a lot.

Instead of covering half the book, I think they could've covered a third and do into more detail. Spend more time with them settling into Arrakis and looking for the traitor and end at the big reveal

It was ultra beautiful though, I can't describe it in words

I don't quite get the hate for it, I will confess I've not read the book (mea culpa), but I've seen both the Lynch version as well as the SciFi channel miniseries, and this is definitely chanelling Lynch but it could've gone harder imo. Not enough horror. My only perplexity was with everyone fighting with short swords like some kind of weird misplaced medieval army, when projectile weapons clearly exist in-universe.

That seems like a significant design shortsight.

Even so, if that's why everyone has tacitly decided to fight hand-to-hand, then woudln't they be better off fighting like Roman maniples or Greek hoplites?

It's worth noting this is a kind of backwards feudal society projected into the future. I always assumed it was a mix of honor/nobility that kept them focused on single combat.

My one issue with the movie is how it does not explain some things that are explained well in the book, like while they all have swords. It's because of their personal shield thingy
