The deeper origin for that is a r*pe joke from 4chan. Gamergaters literally made that the color scheme for their mascot as a reference to that joke.
That's kinda true, but it was more of a shock value thing ala Goatse. It just got spammed so often that the green + purple color palette became it's own joke like Loss or whatever.
