Prison labor is voluntary, but if you talk to any ex-cons or prisoners about it, it's not really voluntary. This guy got sent to solitary for trying to organize his fellow prisoners, solitary confinement is known to be torture.
There were people on twitter talking about how prison labor often isn't voluntary. One man described having to work in cotton fields all day, every day in the burning sun being looked over by sniper towers and guards on horseback. If you refused to work you were sent to solitary confinement.
