they're the epitome of liberal end of history institutional fetishism and playing-by-the rules leads to justice because the western justice system is great!

Jimmy and Chuck's relationship is much more compelling than anything in Breaking Bad.

The relationship between Jimmy and Chuck is absolutely incredible and such a perfect microcosm of this running theme.

Chuck obviously has comorbidities but intentionally or not he's honestly a perfect representation and critique of liberals and the PMC class. Chuck fundamentally cannot accept or acknowledge Jimmy being a good lawyer or even being a lawyer in the first place because doing so would absolutely shatter his identity and worldview. Chuck went to fancy law school, he studied hard, and he has basically an encyclopedic knowledge of the law. He devoted his life to understanding and upholding the entire system.

If Jimmy, a constant screwup all his life conman, can go to night school to a shady university and not only keep pace in the legal profession but even excel in it and do so while flagrantly exposing the classism and blatant contradictions of the American legal system, what does that say about the law Chuck professes to love and admire so much? If Jimmy can go toe to toe with his brother without that encyclopedic knowledge relying solely on good instincts and fundamentals, then what does it say about Chuck himself? Jimmy must fail. He has to fail. Chuck's own insecurities and worldview demand it.

Breaking Bad was pretty good but it gave me too many existential crises

Yes because they try to instill the idea that the justice system works when it's fucking obvious that it does not. Just more american opium for the complacency of libs

Cop dramas even worse bc the cops are infinitely capable (lol, no), and also literally always morally "right". No cop dramas showing the fucking incredibly fash sentiment among themselves, the gangsterisms, etc

The Shield is pretty much nothing but fashy cops thinking they're oh so gangster only to see everything come crashing down around them.

Yeah, I think it's a fantastic show. People are put off by having these fashy cops as protagonists, but the show makes it absolutely clear by the end how pathetic these guys really are. It's basically a character study on toxic masculinity, but also just a cool show to watch, similar to Breaking Bad.

The first season is still a bit episodic here and there, but it gets better from season to season, and is one of the few shows of this type with a great finale.

Ehh, whatever. A courtroom drama can kick a little ass and it's a pretty good environment for performance and tension and stuff. It's a pretty attractive writing concept. That being said I've never watched any lawyer shit that takes place IRL. Court proceedings episodes of Star Trek are always rad and there's a LOT. Also without that genre we'd never had The Cereal Defense or Charlie's displayed width of Bird Law Wisdoms. Matlock was fucking hilarious too.

Granted they tend to focus more on cops, but the Law & Order series are especially terrible about always portraying the prosecutor as this embodiment of justice and the defense attorney as this shady creep/ bitch who is also sometimes kinda coded as a pedo.

Yeah the shady defence lawyer is always put on tv (ironically for the very reason that defence attorneys are so needed, people always assume the accused did it) with no mention of the shady prosecutor who locks up the innocent for the sake of their career.

See how they'd feel about defence lawyers if their teenage child was locked in a room for 12 hours straight with 2 cops lying their asses off

The Ace Attorney games are good, because they have so much bullshit favoring the prosecution it's clear that if the defense didn't have literal magic powers they'd lose every time (unless you're up against the Paynes)

Yeah, I'd say Phoenix Wright counts, but also the first games heavily remark that trials are heavily slanted towards the prosecution, so it manages to escape at least some trappings of crime procedurals and lawyer dramas.

Nah, those are just the kind of courtroom dramas that get pushed the most because of the liberal environment surrounding them. There's enough of them, from Witness to the Prosecution to Primal Fear, which show the faults and insufficiencies within the system.
