The guy who made the bill said the Bible wouldn’t count because school libraries don’t carry the bible

We really fucked up allowing the right to hold a monopoly over "free speech". That used to be our turf.

it's infuriating when i see american leftists saying shit like "free speech is just code for racism without consequences" cuz like that's true in certain contexts (usually online) but historically it's also the only thing that lets the left organize in a country where 3 out of 4 people think all communists should be in prison.

It's a damn shame because like 15 years ago, standing up for free speech meant opposing things like this, which were omnipresent in the 90s and 2000s thanks to the Moral Majority and shit. Back then they would just burn the books and shame the "lib" teachers into quitting, these escalating legal consequences are much scarier.

They'll throw leftists in prison, or worse, for organizing. With or witout free speech protections. Freedom of speech is a meaningless concept.

no, they'll throw leftists in prison for causing a ruckus and doing crime. liberal conceptions of free speech have their limitations and conditions, but it is a bona fide part of the ruling ideology. The posting class on both the right and the left evidently cannot conceive of what it would actually be like if their politics were outlawed, like with actual death squads. Not only would Fred Hampton have been assassinated in his bed, the Panthers would never have existed at all.

Going to end up with school libraries and and literate children being banned in Oklahoma. Makes sense, children are seen as slaves-property in this country to the point of death and abuse, wish the QAnon crowd would get riled up over RL abuse of kids rather than shit they make up, but then they'd be a real threat to the current system instead of precious reverse-psych puppets.

I don't exactly sprint to defend people or situations on "free speech" grounds, but libraries in particular are a place where you want to give a pretty loose leash. I mean it's not like "free speech" has ever been used by the right in good faith anyway ig...

yes and? so are democracy, humanity, diversity, bravery, love, and fat dripping cocks. fascists lie. they obscure. that's their whole deal. the nominally antifascist strategy of just letting them have the run of the symbolic terrain has been a series of unmitigated disasters, which have only become worse with the advent of the internet.

What was the Communist Manifesto written with? That's right, WORDS. Text is inherently communist, and has to be banned

So why not starting to complain about the Bible and other conservative shit? There's no downside. Just remove as many Ayn Rand books as possible.

The way the headline is worded makes it sound like every parent gets one book each to ban. I didn't like Wuthering Heights and my sophomore English teacher was obsessed with it; it would be nice to get one over on her.

OK, I'll complain about every single "history" book that doesn't say "DEATH TO AMERICA" in bold red letters in every page.
