I've actually been following this story (as a way to escape the bleak other stuff happening) Here's how this went down, lol:

    • McDonalds corporate decides that in Russia, they're going to buy a bunch of real estate then franchise it out. Corporate owns the property, but locations are locally operated.
    • McDonald joins Ukraine sanctions and says it's temporarily suspending operations in Russia.
    • Russia passes legislation that any business that remains out of operation for more than 30 days effectively "abandons" their property claims.
    • McDonalds freaks out because they're just rent-seeking landlords, and they try to keep some of locations open to avoid losing all their investment.
    • It's looking like these corporations are going to have their assets appropriated regardless.

I think even the US has a law about that, except it's something insane like 5 years.

You're thinking of Squatting laws. If you live in a house a long ass time and nobody stops you, then the squatter just owns the place. Ultimately this results in violence as landlords are incentivized to attack homeless people living on their properties rent-free to keep the prices high. A mandate to fill their houses would force them to lower their prices since having an empty home would cause them to lose it completely.

There's a bunch of caveats too, like you have to post in the newspaper that you're squatting or something. Squatters rights sort of exist on paper but not in real life.

Just like all other rights in America other than property rights

Uber for “house sitters” so you get paid $5 to go … flush a toilet?

Gonna need fancy PropertyGenius 3000 internet of shit locks for gig worker to get in without keys

It sounds excessive, but how else can you produce receipts for active occupation of investment properties?

I guess that's practice for McD's all over the world - it's basically a way for them to control franchisees tighter by being their landlords.

Yup. McDonalds is a real estate company, at least from the POV of their HQ. The food is just there to boost the price of the real estate, and ensure an occupant.

You see the workers continue making burgers but they are significantly less efficient because there is no one instructing them to continue doing the same job they were already doing

So did they straight up leave abandon all their fixed capital? If so lol

Edit: I've been thinking about this and of course they did. They were planning on reversing their "boycott" as soon as the lib hivemind moved on to a new topic. This is great, get owned McDonald's if you wanted me to feel bad for you you shouldn't have got rich weaponizing human psychology.

It's pretty funny they thought sanctions would be as effective in Russia as the countries they normally bully with them. Like, they became a superpower under the same conditions

This is the funniest part. Feudal backwards country to industrial powerhouse under 100% their own power and the west seems to think that sanctions can end them?

It can hurt them, it can really slow them down while they figure out how to get things on the road again and solve inefficiencies, it absolutely can not stop them. They need a coup to do that.

They need a coup to do that.

The West has also kneecapped the oligarchs by seizing assets and turned ordinary Russians against the West by encouraging a knee-jerk hatred against Russian culture and history, so they've played themselves.

Maybe they should fund the largest Russian opposition party. That'd really own us, the Communists.

Capitalism is far past its point of expiry: it could be ended on the spot with the strike of a pen.

Wow it's almost as if the capitalists had absolutely nothing to do with the success of the brand and it was the workers who were actually keeping it afloat.

In Atlas Shrugged, the capitalists left to form their own epic libertarian society, and society fell apart.

In Russia, the (western) capitalists left but (some) things continued on as normal.

        • Tankiedesantski [he/him]
          ·

Most critical things will continue as normal in the mid-to-long term since Russia has critical resources, domestic industrial capacity, and the ability to trade with China for anything it can't produce.

Imagine the same exodus of Western capital from the UK, for instance, and the picture would be far more grim.

I've heard analysis that China's nuclear option for tech sanctions is just declaring all sanctioned tech to be open source within China.

Would rule if Russia did that.
