TLDW; chemically printed whey protein molecules, fermented. Tastes pretty close, "97% less CO2 production" (big if true), almost as cheap, will likely be cheaper than the real thing as it scales

    Tastes pretty close

I've found that the longer i'm vegan, the more of a downside that becomes.

Depends for me. My main issue with vegan dairy products is that they don't last long and are too expensive. This could rival both fronts.

the price is a problem, and i also find that a lot of these products rely too much on ecologically problematic crops such as palm plantations or almonds. sure, the impact of cattle farming is worse, but still, i'd prefer it if alternatives would rely on something else than palm oil.

sunflower seed cream, roux/bechamel, soy yoghurt, the possibilities are endless. Also, even store-bought plant milks/creams last a lot longer than pus juice

I found this vegan mince/ground pork that tastes way too much like actual body parts. Made a lot of good burgers and meatballs for omnis to enjoy, they were happy with the flavor, but for me it was just a little too... meaty. Also it turns out, looking at the fine print on the back, that it's made by nestle. We found a local chinese brand to replace it with, so it all turned out well in the end.

Yeah, it can be a fine line for me when it's too close to non-vegan food. i've been a vegetarian lib for decades before i turned vegan, largely for aesthetic reasons - i just really, really hate to eat meat, i find it gross, it's like having to eat cat food or smth. and stuff like the beyond burger is just too meaty for me. and now as i'm moving from vegetarianism to veganism, i see similar things happening with a lot of dairy products, i was such a big cheesehead in the past, yet it's beginning to gross me out more and more.

Yeah, same here. I saw this and I'm like, cool, I've surely been vegan long enough I'm lactose intolerant anyway, I'm good without lab grown cheese.

I'm kind of sus on any of this lab created stuff until we understand prions more fully. A relatively simple production error could essentially wipe out the human race.

The best guess we have on prion disorders is that everyone, or most everyone, carries the gene that will start producing the misfolded protein that eventually turns your brain to Swiss cheese. Scientists have ruled out nucleotides as the culprit, and intense heating, which typically denatures proteins, seems to have no effect. In short, we all carry a ticking time bomb inside us that could flip at a moment's notice, causing your brain to produce misfolded proteins which will eventually kill you. I don't think we should be creating artificial proteins until we understand the transcription->translation process fully. Prions terrify me.

Reminds me of the article about Chinese scientists chemically synthesizing starch. Technology like this is going to be bigger than breaking the nitrogen cycle. Get shrekt haber-bosch process.

Lactose intolerant vegans can do a review on whether they shit themselves like real milk

I don't want to eat animal products even if they're fake. No committed vegan ever stopped being vegan because there weren't convincing enough animal cruelty fakes. No committed animal abuser ever stopped abusing animals because some vegan product came out trying to mimic the feelings associated with animal abuse.

I do not see any value whatsoever in this kind of thing. It's a waste of time and resources for everyone involved.

Not to intrude on c/vegan (not trying to struggle sesh), but if "clean" meat gets cheaper per pound than those beyond burgers or whatever I will switch over same day and never look back.

The field of plant-based products mimicking animal abuse products is not new at all, and I'm not jumping to conclusions. I'm making observations.

I have a friend that's a dedicated omnivore but prefers the Gardein fishless fillets over the real thing. Imo there's plenty of merit in giving people a choice that might have reservations about "muh tastebuds" but are also cognizant of the impact that their diets have on the environment and will opt in if they don't feel like they're sacrificing mouth feels.
