As Mr O’Rourke continued to chastise the governor, another man on stage called him a “sick son of a b****” who would “come to a deal like this to make a political issue.”

Nothing in this country is ever political nor should it be :grillman:

I went to a Roe V. Wade protest recently and one of my girlfriends liberal feminist friends came. When we got to the rally after the March, PSL and other radical groups were there. Obviously they were talking about socialism, anti imperialism, and how biden sucks (to which she said "Don't they know who the alternative was?!?!?) She literally said "Why are they making this so political". I was absolutely astounded

Man, if there was any pathos in Beto here I would actually think this was pretty cool, but I don't buy it at all. Give me some shouting, some rage at fucking elementary schoolers being murdered, and I'd totally support him in this but the way he just stood there like a muppet and monologued at seemingly normal volume makes this seem like a low effort PR stunt, nothing more.

This is Beto o’dork’s favorite issue to signal on. He really gets his freak on, calling for absolute seizure of all guns in Texas and other maximalist irrational demands. Centrist Democrats love the gun control issue because they can emotionally rile up their base and it’s guaranteed to be a dead end, and their wing of capital doesn’t particularly mind if guns get banned so they don’t panic about it

Lol when asked how the guns will be given back to the government, he said he trusts that Americans will abide by the law and hand them over voluntarily

He's actually not entirely wrong on that one. Gun restrictions in America over the past 100 years have largely involved a compliant public handing over their high capacity magazines or whatever once the restriction is put into place. Shootouts involving cops seizing illegal arms are quite rare and usually huge national stories, like Waco or Ruby Ridge or something.

Complete seizure of all guns though would probably be different yeah. Can't imagine that happening.

I gotta say I do think the "Are those plates level 4" jokes are funny, because fuck the BATFE. Hating on the ATF is the only real horseshoe theory.

The Turner Diaries is about the federal government trying to confiscate guns and it leads to a race war and then an ethnostate where women are slaves. It's literally their plan.

I've read the Turner Diaries and a central part of the white nationalists' plan operates on the assumption black soldiers are inherently less effective than white soldiers. Also that white fascist soldiers would be perfectly willing to do suicide bombings.

it's not exactly the most bulletproof plan in the world, which is why white nationalists here are doing their plan with money and privatization instead

Has anyone actually handed over their guns, though? No red state has ever tried serious restrictions, and the only places that are really disarmed are Californian cities and the Coptocracy of New York City. Even Chicago still has a lot of guns. Everyone else is strapped to the fucking gills. There are red states that have laws on the books preventing local authorities from cooperating with the feds on anything related to firearms.

Like, in good faith; Do you know of any cases where there has been meaningful, observable compliance with gun control legislation?

I'd say most of America complies with gun control legislation and when they don't, they loophole it. Most of what I know of is in California and New York though, like the Mulford Act. The gun control act of 1968 also completely banned mail-order firearms, which is still in place and there's been no serious legal or public attempt to overturn it. Also FOPA in 1986 involved a whole lot of gun owners voluntarily registering their machine guns, registering some hundreds of thousands of them.

This isn't to say gun control legislation works or America should attempt more "draconian" gun laws. I just think Americans are by and large feckless cowards, especially the NRA libertarian types. Most gun owners here use them as toys and don't beef with the law. They're allowed to have guns because of their compliance, not because feds are afraid of them.

I own a pistol by the way, it's hopefully a deterrent against pigs and fascists

Honestly, the most heart I've seen out of a mainstream Democrat since Howard Dean. You'd almost think a guy like this would maybe actually do some fucking politics if he ever got into office.

Shame its purely insincere theatrics. I might have enjoyed it if I was still living in the 90s.

speaking of "everything i don't like is political", a friend of mine's boss literally said they other day they wanted to send their elementary aged kid to private catholic school instead of sending them to the local public school, because public school is "too political and godless".

this person has a PhD and a tenured position in academia.
