Starmer had previously refused to state whether trans women like Lia Thomas should be allowed to compete in women’s sport amid accusations from Harry Potter author JK Rowling that his party could “no longer be counted on to defend women’s rights”.

Ah, so this is what the Labour party is designed to do: make billionaire feel better about imaginary threats from minority groups.

This right here. This is why you need to purge the actual, committed liberals from your org. They will do much worse if given the chance.

death panel had an ep from February I think that discussed one of the co-hosts' new book, A Short History Of Trans Misogyny, where she posits that terf island is the way it is in part because their colonial apparatus was deeply involved with policing the sexuality of the colonized where norms about gender and sexuality were nothing like those in England but nonetheless had to conform to that violent structure.

He just supports whatever is the most popular policy on trans people as per the yougov poll lol. https://yougov.co.uk/society/articles/43194-where-does-british-public-stand-transgender-rights-1

He's not any more transphobic than the average Briton. I would argue he's less so because he doesn't seem to want to limit our healthcare access yet, although NHSE already drafted some dystopian guidance that will turn it all into conversion therapy thinly veiled in double-speak. To any British trans people reading this I'd start making plans to leave.

If he wants to blow with the wind the Lib Dems are always recruiting, but he is meant to be leading the progressive wing of British politics. The same yougov poll shows attitudes towards transgender people have been steadily improving over the last few years, and that Labour voters are much more likely to support transgender rights.

Jezza shoulda purged him with extreme prejudice.

Yeah it's absolutely wild. Even progressives in the UK are unusually anti-trans and extremely xenophobic and will repeat TERF rhetoric and shit about migrants coming in and claiming mansions on benefits verbatim while usually still claiming to be progressives. They're not even libs, it's straight up GOP-level rhetoric.

Somewhat related - Have you seen the UnitedKingdom subreddit? Absolutely insane. If you have not, I would keep away, the damage it has done to my sanity is irreparable. I'm not convinced it's all just bots either, unless there's a hidden space on the lemmyverse somewhere or elsewhere where actual progressive brits congregate to discuss internal policy and news it seems to be actually fairly representative of the average british bloodlust as well, even for young metropolitan people.

it never works. i understand politics is not always dictated by what is right or good, but besides being wrong to scapegoat a marginalized group, getting more bigoted never works for liberal parties under conditions of widespread reaction. even if the rump masses of Undecided Voters are genuinely slavering for the mass liquidation of trans people (which, in the UK at least, may well be true), you are not going to benefit politically more than the dyed in the wool jodhpurs-and-riding-crop aristo fascists that make up the other side. you aren't making some kind of calculated sacrifice (of someone else) to gain some other political victory. you aren't even making a savvy career move. at best, you are buying your own ticket out of the camps when your cowardly submission gives them permission to seize absolute power and they need a typewritten explanation of why you aren't one of the removed whom we must liquidate for the good of the nation.

I think it's not a big enough problem to care abt. It's literally just a conservative wedge issue so people get up in arms about trans women.

Besides, sports governing bodies already have criteria about what biology is allowed to compete. There have been many times that even masculine cis women have fallen under their scrutiny for having hormone profiles that give them too much of an advantage. I don't know why this topic gets dragged out onto the public square. (Except I do, and it's GOP strategy.) It's like if the entire country started panicking about swimmers having suits that are too high-tech. Who gives a fuck.

it doesn't really matter when we are being murdered by the state and by fascists in the street, is the point. politicians jumping on the bandwagon to shit on us like this is cruel opportunism that helps get more of us killed.

No sport is fair. Literally NO sport is fair.

People under six feet can't play in the NFL. Is it fair? No. It's sports.

There have been cis-gendered women (usually black) who have been disqualified on suspicion of being transgender because their bodies naturally produce high levels of testosterone. Should black women be banned from sports to make competitions more "fair" for white women? Should they do a DNA test before every race and apply handicaps based on individual genes? Sports are not fair. Never have been.

Can someone explain to me how, cis women are able to compete fairly with trans women?

cis women can compete fairly by not cheating to have their opponents disqualified

https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/55/11/577 Here you go. Tl/dr after two years of hormone therapy it appears to be a wash. Trans women were still faster on average than cis women, but trans men could now do more sit ups on average than cis men.

I wonder if those additional sit-ups on average can be attributed to trans men being much shorter than cis-men on average. They can probably do more pushups as well because of that same attribute.

A lot of it depends on the sport. Track and Field is a hotbed for this issue and the IAAF gave out their criteria for trans athletes that I think is reasonable. Trans athletes haven’t ever dominated the sport at the top levels and I don’t think they will be anytime soon. There’s hundreds of trans athletes that don’t get past the high school level for every single trans athlete that finds success at the elite level.

The sport has historically had issues with intersex athletes from Africa and the Soviet Union that have led to controversial decisions.
