On one hand Japan is pretty racist towards Koreans and Korean-Japanese and a lot of people want to tie this to them somehow.

On the other hand Abe apparently had ties to the Unification Church (or the Moonies as they are better known over here) and the church is a huge scam.

never thought Moonies would get tied into this. Moonies are a huge rightwing-anti-communist "Christian" Cult that started in South/Bad Korea, but is huge in the States and elsewhere. They organize mass weddings that makes it to mainstream news, they own the WashingtonTimes, which is similar to Epoch Times. A funny tidbit, with all the mass shootings in Murica, a while ago some might remember a group fought back against the call for banning guns by holding Christian gatherings and weddings full of guns and Murican flags, the leader of the group is one of the sons of the founder of the Moonies lol

It's this Korean cult centered around the religious views of the Reverend Moon, which is why they're called "the moonies." Moon was pretty wealthy, I believe in part due to the importance of tithing, and he uses that money for lobbying. That, and his anticommunist views and his stance on reunifying the Korean peninsula, means he had some connections with certain political figures and founded the Washington Times newspaper . Here is a funny little video, complete with a H.W. Bush video lead in, of Moon making an address at the Washington Times Anniversary in 1992.

Western intelligence agencies loved the Moonies at first because their theory was that the North Koreans needed a cult-like figure to latch unto from the West. This position fell out of favor when it was found North Koreans would rather kill Moon than worship him.

Intelligence agencies have been propping up cults and religious movements for 100's of years to manipulate powerful members especially.

My immediate assumption was that the shooter was a Nazi who thought he'd find Abe followed around everywhere by a Jew.

    • Japan has a very low rate of religious violence. But Japan does have a Nazi problem

    • Reports alternate between "certain group" and "certain religious group." Jews are both a religious group and an ethnic group.

    • The shooter didn't have a problem with Abe's far-right politics but was "dissatisfied" with him, for unclear reasons. If the shooter believed that he was under the influence of a global Jewish conspiracy, that would explain that contradiction.

    • The shooter followed Abe expecting to find the religious figure, as opposed to just tracking the religious figure directly. Because the religious figure he wanted to kill didn't exist since they were an imaginary Jewish puppetmaster. Likely, his goal was to free Abe from said puppetmaster, and decided that if he couldn't do that, the only option was to kill Abe.

    • You might ask, why would the shooter think that a conspiracy would require Abe to be constantly overseen by a Jew, and why would he think that killing that individual person would stop the conspiracy? Because that's exactly the kind of dumb shit that Nazis believe.

It's possible that the religious groups mentioned in the thread are relevant, but I'll bet if you dig around on Japanese far-right forums, you'll find conspiracy theories linking them to Jews. Most right wing conspiracies are rooted in antisemitism, if you dig deep enough.

The shooter's mom donated a shit ton of money to the Moonies and bankrupted the family, so it's likely not antisemitism this time

Honestly would love it if the shooter had a actual material reason for revenge on Abe instead of just anti semetic nazi brainworms

Yeah I'm split between either someone with a legitimate grudge against Abe or just a crazed ultra-nationalist chud

It seems he had a legitimate personal grudge against the Moonies and was trying to get revenge on them, so it doesn't look nationalist at all. I guess he settled on Abe as the Moonie leadership were hard to target

But Japan does have a Nazi problem

funny you mention that, but I've recently learned from my family over in Korea that apparently apparently Jewish education has become a big thing over there. It's more to do with the cultural tradition of scholarship in Korea, which in contemporary times has been perverted into an obsession in forcing your kids to go through academic rigours in order to increase their chance of achieving a desired life as a member of the petite-bourgeoise.

That said, I find this both hilariously and disturbingly ironic.

“Jews account for just 0.2 percent of the world’s population, but 23 percent of Nobel Prize winners have been Jewish,” Seoul-based student Choi Jae-young related. “And despite all the time and money we spend on education, only one Korean has ever won a Nobel award. That irks many Koreans. It makes us want to learn Jews’ secrets.”

This is kind of like Japan's Fugu Plan, where there was an initiative to induce immigration of Jews from Europe and America to Japan, based in part because the Japanese thought the Protocols of the Elders of Zion made the Jews sound impressive.

That is somehow both cool as hell and also deeply stupid. What the fuck. I'm Jewish and laughing my ass off about this.
