It's because Western fiction in the 50s was so obscenely popular and so obscenely whitewashed that the perception of what a cowboy was got so fucked.

        1. whites have all the money
        2. every form of media ever, and every portrayal of history from any era ever in geological time, gets crammed with white faces in order to sate them and take their cash
        3. everyone else who watches said media after-the-fact doesn't realize they just watched propaganda

happened to westerns, happened to anime, happened to jazz/rocknroll/etc et al

I'm playing RDR2 again and this is literally the dumbest thing I have ever read. This is like the liberal that can only conceive of stereotypes.

Arthur is a complex character who nevertheless consistently chooses (or allows the player to choose) to be on the right side of history in an otherwise fucked up world.

Racists (actually awful shitheads in general) violently suppress the realization that they're just the fucking worst people imaginable. So they have to constantly make up contrived reasonings that anybody who claims not to be racist is just lying to themselves and that it's completely fine and normal to be like them. Once you're aware of that kind of cope, it's easy to notice it everywhere in posts made by bigots.

He's been a part of a rag tag group of outcast and outlaws since he was a kid, the gang very much stands apart from 19th century society for better and worse.
Why you would expect Arthur to conform to any of the prevailing notions of the time just because he is white is mind boggling to me.

Also Sean is based AF. https://youtu.be/k93aGx5Zy7M?t=14

His Fenian dad raised him well. Not just the no such thing as "no politics", but that everyone around Arthur is hated for their race or religion, and just because he doesn't think about it doesn't mean it doesn't effect everything around him.

Arthur is an incredible character and it is insane that they imagine to themselves that his mannerisms and shit change cause he is not being racist. Like same mo-cap as always ffs. Like they show Arthur be ignorant to racial injustices, or nuances, and learn, he doesn't make a declaration about white privilege or anything, but he recognizes how fucked things are in his own way.

Also the game is set in 1899 FFS, like pro-native american sentiment for instance was at its peak, racial justice was as much a battleground as ever but this was just 9 years after the UMWA came onto the scene taking up the fight of the KOL but significantly being integrated. It would be a shock if across the states in RDR2 the UMWA wasn't operating at least one union or had connections. The point is the 1890s are not some monolith of bigotry

If you can't portray cowboys because all your white protagonists would have been incredibly racist, maybe it's time to start making games about maroon colonies and Indigenous resistance instead.

I mean, I'd play the fuck out of a game where I capture Detroit as part of Tecumseh's army.

A game where you play as a Seminole in the Second Seminole War would be a perfect fit, tonally, for the Red Dead franchise. Bop around pre-Civil War Florida with a band of escaped slaves and the remnants of several tribes destroyed by the Trail of Tears, get a foothold in a new area and build up your camp over a couple chapters of side quests and world building, just as things seem to be settling in start clashing with local militias and eventually the US Army. It'll have a downer ending but not before all of the principal characters have a badass moment - write the main character as having some kind of drama with the Seminole leader that gets resolved right around when they both go down shooting and you've got the game of the year.

We can start them off with something that'll prime the broader audience for indigenous struggle: Bouddica's rebellion against Roman imperialism and brutality. It'll infuriate the chuds to go from that to killing Custer with a through-line.

Anyone who demands that "realism" is paramount when it comes to historical media should be required to shit themselves to death when consuming media depicting historical periods from more than 200 years ago so they can get the truly authentic experience.

Thesis: Protagonists should not racist bigots in order to not alienate POC players.

Antithesis: Protagonists should be racist bigots for the sake of historical accuracy since white people are racist bigots.

Synthesis: Protagonists should not be white.

That's actually a feature in the "hardcore" mode for the medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance. When you start a new game you have to reroll a couple times because your character will die in childbirth or get the plague and die before he reaches adventuring age. It's pretty funny.
