Don't mind us, just testing our hypersonic missiles by flying it across Taiwan:

Even before the main stage of the exercise kicked off on Thursday, Global Times called them “unprecedented,” adding that Chinese missiles were expected to “fly over the island of Taiwan for the first time.” People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces are also expected to enter the area within 12 nautical miles of the island, and could potentially surround the island “entirely,” it added, citing military “experts.”

Is China still "Weak" now that it's testing weapon systems that the US won't have parity in for at least a decade assuming the MIC can actually make one that works?

Everytime I see this claim I like to counter that China has allegedly hacked super top secret files like the schematics to the F-35, so how can anyone assume China doesn't know about America's secret weapons?

Very entertaining to watch them realize that they can't answer this question without either admitting that China didn't copy the F-35 or invent some sort of super duper top secret clearance bullshit.

The average American lib is convinced the MIC already has space lasers and tungsten rod doomsday devices prepped and ready to go ... because it was in a Call of Duty game. Sometimes they'll even point to cutscenes from the game as proof they're real.

Point out there's literally no evidence these weapons exist and they respond "well of course they're not gonna let us know about it until we need to use it."

        Absolute brain worms.

Magical thinking induced by the half-unconscious white supremacist ideas that underpins the evil empire. If evil non-whites have advanced weapons that must surely mean that the far more skilled, intelligent and industrious white good guys are going to have something even more advanced.

And besides, what would all those money poured into the MIC be going to anyways? Grifts and corruption? Please, be real for a moment, corruption is something they have in non-white countries. No, the only logical explanation is that the money went to building secret invisible sci-fi weapons that are totally real.

Part of the reason that Americans in particular are so fine with war is because the last war between a foreign power and the US that happened on contiguous US soil was the Mexican American war in the 1840s.

They haven't firsthand seen or experienced the horror it brings, and almost everyone alive is 6+ generations removed from any of it.

Our system is very efficient at making private interest rich, you see, which is its unstated goal. You know this already though. But I can't hear you over these commercials of eagle screams and cool military vehicles shooting targets on the TV which prove how superior the US system is.

I wonder at what point do officials in Taiwan just surrender? They know they can't possibly win and significant public sentiment is in reunification, are they that high on their own supply or is the vice really that tight from :amerikkka: ?

I think reunification is becoming more popular but the overall sentiment there is still largely for the status quo. IIRC just maintaining status quo is the position of the KMT, right now Taiwan's biggest political party.

I would imagine a serious reunification effort is a few decades off -- after the U.S. has seen a truly undeniable decline, specifically in its ability/willingness to do imperialism, and after China has fully overtaken the U.S. in the most developed sectors of the economy.

At that point I bet we'd see a "one country, two systems" approach like in Hong Kong, where Taiwan becomes formally a part of the PRC but retains substantial political independence for 50-100 years, with a gradual transition to full integration.

Isn't there a zone in southern China that has casinos and luxury shopping and such? I imagine that's how the two systems would look in practice until things developed more. Maybe mainland can finally use 注音符号 instead of 拼音, which I figure is a pride thing.

Macau is the one you're thinking of. It generally operates the same way as Hong Kong, as a special administrative region.

Maybe mainland can finally use 注音符号 instead of 拼音, which I figure is a pride thing.

Actually the other way around, Pinyin is the international standard for the romanization of Chinese. Taiwan doesn't completely use it for pretty much the same reason the US doesn't use metric: Boomers insisting on being different.

Yeah, that might have been it. It was one of those English speaking folks who do videos of their travels around China, either guy guy who makes fun of the BBC a lot or Katherine's Journey to the East or another dude on there. Though, I feel like if it was Macau that I would have remembered it as such.

And yeah, I know that pinyin is the accepted standard in mainland but I like bopomofo for the same reason that I like hangul and hiragana/katakana versus romaja and romanji (and this all besides that 汉字 are good because it works better across the many dialects). I like orthographies that are formed from the languages themselves versus trying to use latin script for everything (even though the latter is much more convenient for myself). Consider the many attempts at romanization and even how Taiwanese pinyin is slightly different than mainland. Granted, pinyin has the momentum and that's hard to go against and it was developed by the Chinese versus an outside influence. In other words

i've been seeing this "hypersonic missle" term a lot and decided to look it up. i thought it was just like "faster than sound", which big deal, right?

anyway, hypersonic appears to be a designation above supersonic. supersonic is 1-5x the speed of sound. hypersonic is 5-10x the speed of sound.

from some chud military weapon wank site:

This DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle was previously designated by Pentagon as the WU-14. It can deliver both conventional or nuclear payloads. It is launched on top of the missile, but unlike a regular warhead that follows a predictable path, the DF-ZF travels at hypersonic speed and can make sharp maneuvers. Once the glide vehicle separates from the missile it can reach speeds between Mach 5 and Mach 10 (6,173-12,360 km/h) Due to its extreme speed and maneuverability the glide vehicle is much harder to intercept than regular re-entry vehicles. Furthermore gliding extends its range. Furthermore it can approach a target on an unpredictable ballistic trajectory. If initial attack fails it can even reengage the target. Alternatively the glide vehicle can descend to a very low altitude just before reaching its target. This makes it hard to detect and intercept and further improves resistance to air defense systems. Conventional interceptor missiles have difficulty against maneuvering targets traveling faster than Mach 5 (6 173 km/h). So combination of extreme speed and maneuverability allows to overcome even advanced air defense and missile defense systems.

i'm guessing they are not human piloted but more like computer piloted/human navigated, because those speeds are bonkers. and for reference, pretty much inland mountainous fujian is about 250-500km to basically anywhere in Taiwan or around it.

so assuming the longest distance at the slowest speed, a missile fired is going to impact it's target just under 5 minutes later. at the shortest distance and the highest speed, it's 1 minute 13 seconds.

    that's wild.

Yeah it's why it's a big deal that America didn't have one. We have been selling NATO members on our missile defense systems and China/Russia have leap frogged right over it with these missiles.

There's a video of one flying across Ukraine and it looks like a glowing orb that is on screen for a second before it's over the horizon.

What’s sus the video or the missile?

The video - I didn't manage to find a credible source showing it with a similar description. And most other sources I've found had people heavily suggesting it's either fake or unconfirmed. It also looks slow to me. And this suggests the same - it's about the first video I mentioned above, in which the speed seems roughly similar to the last one you're talking about:

The speed of a hypersonic missile in terminal phase (right before it hits target) is very high, greater than a mile a second,” Kelly Stephani, a mechanical science and engineering professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "If I had to estimate, this video shows a projectile traveling ~1000-2000 ft to target, and took 2 seconds to impact. If it were a hypersonic missile, it would have traveled that distance in a fraction of a second."

But then again, it's talking about the terminal phase of flight.

This, however, seems real but much less fascinating than seeing the thing crossing the sky.

At Mach 5, Beijing is a little under 2 hours from DC. At Mach 10, around 55 minutes. It's about the same as from anywhere else in China to anywhere else in the US (since a straight shot goes over the north pole). Makes me wonder, China has a no first strike nuclear policy, what's it's regular missile strike policy? I assume probably another no first strike ever since the debacle in Vietnam.

Invading Taiwan right now is exactly what the western powers want to happen. China has all the time in the world to peacefully reunify. But the yanks know every day that goes by, China gets a little stronger while the US gets a little weaker. The US would love nothing more than China getting involved in a major war that would have the chance of destabilizing the country. They should not invade but they also can't just do nothing when the US so flagrantly violates the One China Policy.
