Just remembered that they're very particular about this speed in Back to the Future. Do I have paranoid brain worms or were the producers fash?

i'm very normal and definitely had friends as a teenager, but I watched the BTTF DVD commentary at least 100 times as a kid and I distinctly remember Bob Gale mentioning it's 88 because it's easy to remember and looks good on those segmented LCD displays

All the things previously mentioned, but it's also a gag because the Delorean was infamous at the time for being a really crappy car

It hitting 88 miles an hour was supposed to be just as ridiculous a concept as time travel

I think it’s one of two things: Either because “8” is used as a symbol for infinity because it looks like one or because, on an LCD display, an “8” has every possible light on, giving the appearance of being “maxed-out”

And then it’s two 8s specifically because 8 mph would be too slow and 888 mph would be too fast for a car to reach. 88 is fast but perfectly achievable (for a good car)

sometimes I think people on the left give reactionary memes too much power by giving too much of a shit about them, I saw someone banned in the modlog for having 88 in their username and like, yeah, it's a little sus, but maybe wait until they post some sus shit? not everyone in the world is intimately familiar with 8 8 = H H omg heil hitler!! I can imagine some random person who was born in 1988 or something being really confused over their username "being fascist" when in reality it is merely "boring"

or like idk someone making a username who is from a country that doesn't even use the latin alphabet so like why would they even have that alphabet association in their mind

ive never met someone irl who was familiar with the 88 thing, its kind of an online thing to know. I mean, its gotten more known, but still.

My total at a grocery store came to $14.88 one time and I struggled mightily to explain its horrors to the cashier, who was a chud (somehow I learned that both his parents were sheriff's deputies), but was not nearly as online as I was. I have no idea why I bothered; I guess I recoiled and felt like I had to explain myself.

I wouldn't give someone with an 88 in their username a pass here, but it would kinda suck to be born in the nazi dogwhistle year

There's a bus poster where I'm from that chose an 88 bus to display on it. Every time I see it, I wonder if the designer was a chud, even though that's insane. The chuds have definitely made us paranoid...

it kinda seems to me like it gets more utility out of having us jumping at shadows than allowing fascists to signal to each other, especially when in today's political climate they can mostly just go "Hello fellow fascist, great day to be nazis am I right?" and be unmolested for it

Yeah, I sadly could see some 4chan dweeb chuckling at the psychic damage we're inflicting on ourselves.

Which just makes me want to decondition the behaviour. I mean, rationally, even if the poster designer was a chud, hell even if the whole bus company were chuds and it was a conscious decision, what difference does it really make to put an 88 on a bus poster? It's not worth our time to even consider, right?

Correct. If you need to actually have dealings with the bus company beyond just taking the bus, maybe consider it, but otherwise it would be a total waste of time and effort.

yep the movie was made when Libya was America's supervillain of the week. Reagan bombed them around the same time. If it was made a few decades later they would be al qaeda.

    Is this a bit?

    :brainworms:

Spielberg's production company was in charge, and the guy is definitely not a fan of Nazis.

Semi-sincereposting just incase this isn't a bit, but comeon jack :biden-troll:

Yeah fuck you Mikhail Aleksandrovich Bonch-Bruevich

it took me like half an hour to find a leftist born in 1888. Cool guy, glad I found him. He did radio improvements for Lenin, here is a letter Lenin wrote to him

"I take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude and sympathy for the great work and inventions in the field of radio you do. Newspaper without paper and without distance that you create will be a great thing. Fully and I promise you all possible assistance to this and similar works. With best wishes." Ulyanov

edit: I also found a Moldovan socialist revolutionary party member who voted for unifying Bessarabia with communist Moldova but that's it and his death date is literally just "20th century" Ignație Budișteanu spoopy

edit 2: holy shit fucking Bukharin was born in 1888, well that beats the other two I guess

It is clearly fascist, as evidenced by Doc Brown not once having the idea to go back in time and kill Hitler.

Spielberg Zemeckis seems kinda racist in an unexamined , low key way. Like Marty inspires the mayor to run in 1955 and invents rock and roll. He does that in Forrest Gump as well - Elvis is inspired by Forrest instead of black performers and all the POC characters are basically part of the background for him throughout the film.

Director of both is Zemeckis, but yes, BOTF has this weird racism to it. And of course, Spielberg's company produced all Zemeckis' stuff.

I don't recall anything fashy about back to the Future, just some racist stuff like a White guy "Inventing" rock'n'roll.
