Wait, so you mean having western multinationals flood into developing countries and disrupt their local economies by setting up large operations that extract natural resources which are immediately exported to richer countries is bad for the people in those countries :shocked-pikachu:

Lol at the people saying "what we shouldnt trade with them" as if we engage in fair "rules-based" economic relations with the global south instead of holding them hostage, forcing them to become indebted to us and pillaging their resources.

only two comments mentioned finance, which is a big reason the USA hasn't fallen behind during their covid crisis parasitism

    check out this idealist liberalism:

Foreign investments isn’t actually good if you want your ecomomy to develop, because foreign investment = foreign ownership. This also leaves you at the mercy of said foreign companies.

This is completely false. Even if there is foreign-ownership, there is knowledge transfer

South Korea got the same deal western Europe did: become a client state of the empire and we'll build up your economy for you and be your military protection. The US did not offer this client state status to Latin America or Africa, though...

I always love the ahistorical analysis of so many of these comments. Users really talking about autarkic countries like Cuba never opening up their borders for trade. Was it perhaps in response to external geopolitical factors? Dunno, but the fact remains that they didn't, and I will not look into it further.
