I love this place - it's my safe refuge on the internet. That said, if someone has valid complaints then it's probably worth hearing them out. We certainly aren't perfect, and while I get the sentiment, I also want this place to avoid becoming too insular.

And like, as somewhat disciplined socialists, our goal probably shouldn't be to push out fledgling leftists who don't understand the culture here yet. Let them vent, let them get dunked on, and if they don't learn, drop the hammer. The mods have always done a pretty good job of dealing with the obvious wreckers as they pop up.

tbf i feel the same way about certain users who loudly boast about how much they hate the CTH podcast to burnish their "left" credentials

I think they, for the most part, realized that they are rich white people and as such were not the right people to be weighing in extensively about them.

When they did weigh in extensively, their takes tended to be sometimes cringe, so that was probably the right call.

full disclosure, I posted an askchapo post a few months back where I asked what people thought about CTH's response to the George Floyd protests. I was generally curious

If they actually wanted to use the CTH podcast to burnish their "left" credentials they would simply forget it existed because they've never listened to it, like me, the one true leftist

i don't get boasting about hating the podcast. Like I think chapo is cringe sometimes and painfully straight, but the show isn't really for me.

it's like having an opinion on a mediocre toothpaste. who the fuck cares? it's toothpaste.

It might not be as good as it was in say 2018 but at this point if you listen to it you know what you're going to get (mostly extended dunking on media dorks and Twitter weirdos). If that's not for you then I don't know why you're either subjecting yourself to torture or whining about things you're not consuming.

my experience with the podcast was just

~2018 ish i decided to see if there were commies on reddit, having been one for over a decade
checked out the mainstream leftist subs
          they were shit
they said that r/chapotraphouse was full of scumbags
i thought "that sounds like my people"
i hung around the sub for 6 months
then thought "oh, i should check out the podcast this sub is ostensibly about"
          listened to an episode
          it was shit
thought "oh, it might just be a bad episode"
asked for what the best episode was
          listened to that one
"huh, these people are insufferable yanks, i'm not going to listen again"
and that's where i am now

also they make more in a month than i do in a year, so fuck 'em

It still has its moments. Although I read a great point about the podcast in how it's really just a spicier Daily Show, now that the main thrust seems to be covering the latest spoofs and goofs in Washington

i think it's good that we can currently whinge about mod actions without having to do the star citizen culty preface thing
if all their comments are about how they hate the place, then yeah, help them to kick the habit of coming here

Yeah, if the mods don't already do that they should. I don't want to deal with some miserable toxic asshole.

If you have someone obsessed with complaining to everyone at a bar about that bar, they get tossed out by the bouncer lol

That's how social spaces work. If you don't do that, everyone else just leaves and then it's just the miserable asshole sitting in an abandoned bar.

Which would be fine and dandy except the mods take account age into extreme consideration and will ban new users for very slight grievances while allowing older accounts to tell you things like "you should be killed" over things which absolutely do not merit that (transphobes/etc get the wall obviously, that kind of bigotry merits that kind of response) while simply punishing them with comment removal and any criticism of these kinds of decisions will typically also result in a ban accusing you of either misinformation or being a wrecker or some other non-respondant accusation which tbh Isn't Cool and now you've got an even younger new account more vulnerable to this which is even less cool

Remember when people were allowed to publically debate moderator policy, bans, etc?

It was a disaster. This place has been running much more smoothly since the mods banned dissent. Really makes you think :soviet-hmm:

why would anyone ever post mod criticism on an alt on a website where even the mildest and well-reasoned criticism of mod action will result in a ban and where account age gets taken into consideration making holding onto a main desirable (ironically in conflict with the "for op-sec make new accounts all the time!" folk)

          I mean I can't think of a reason

If you need to save certain takes for alt accounts for fear of getting banned, they're probably shit takes

"mods taking account age into consideration is kind of shit" isn't really a shit take but I guess with a 2021 account you don't have to worry about that as much, you could probably tell me I should be killed and publicly request a ban for yourself and be fine

which is kind of a problem in conflict with "just make a new account who cares" being an appropriate take

Except in at least most of those cases it is literally some 4chanite raider or a long-time user recently banned for something serious making alts that's getting caught. Like I browse by new and often see it happen in real time, where a brand new account starts posting stuff that's a bit inflammatory and a little sus, then you look at their comments and they're trying to be a caricature made up by someone on 4chan, with speech littered with 4chanisms because they're so immersed in that environment that they don't know how to code switch out of it. And then a mod spots them and they're banned within minutes, just as the account is starting to scream slurs at people.

Treated as wreckers by us lowly posters isn't the same as treated as wreckers by mods.

So, as a general group immune response, I think posters get to :fry: suspicious posts.

Ya it was a lazy shitpost (shitcomment?) and was more taking a dig at myself and everyone here in general but not actually being serious. Like in my head Im saying I agree while prolly being guilty of it myself at some point as well as others who may be agreeing. Idk I didnt put much thought in to it but TLDR I didnt mean to imply youre a hypocrite or anything.
