I had an ex who worked as a grantwriter for a shark conservation org. Most of their funding came from 9-digit millionaires. If she could get $100k out of them, she'd defend them against my accusation that the other 99.9% of their wealth came from doing the things that destroy the oceans. That the PR value of giving $100k written off their taxes is then used to greenwash their war against nature. They were good people who cared about sharks, even though the ways they're killing the ocean are undermining the entire food chain sharks are such important apex predators of.

He's a frequent guest on game show Um, Actually which y'all might enjoy, it's a trivia show where nerd questions get asked but there's something wrong with them and you gotta go "um, actually" and say what it is

But actually my gf just told me he's only in two episodes. I thought it was more. Brendan Lee mulligan is a frequent guest though

Hated how much I enjoyed Um Actually lol, I guess it's just fun to watch nerds being passionate about the things they like. 😋 Though I hated how good I was at the star wars questions, I have no idea where I get that knowledge from...

He rides the line. If he goes full commie he is never gonna have enough clout to make anything big in media. It'll be intresting to see of the system breaks him and he goes full liberal

The Patagonia story was a great way to see which online 'leftists' ended up showing their whole asses rushing to slobber over a 'good' billionaire.

I have a close friend who bought into a "good one" billionaire that supposedly offered college free of charge to poor kids in a bad neighborhood. I asked that friend to pry a bit deeper, and it was revealed to be a performative for-profit grift all along where he was effectively paid for his "philanthropy" and taking money out of one of his pockets and putting it in another.

Jason Hickel (friend of the pod :citations-needed:) talked about how he used to work for a charity in Africa that had poverty alleviation as one of it's goals, and how they would analyze why they weren't making any difference in that regard.

Turns out they couldn't do anything about poverty without getting "political", which the leadership didn't want as that would make them controversial and then the donations would stop coming. Better to stick with what gets them paid.

The best thing was when the TheNorthFace dude buyed a lot of patagonia land, "donated it" to make a wildlife park and fucking died of hypothermia.

More people should follow his example.

    tax the rich

lol imagine realizing all this awful shit and thinking the solution is reform. "Tax the rich" assumes the rich should still exist. "Tax the rich" assumes bourgeois laws apply to the bourgeoisie.

But yes. Bourgeois Philanthropy is a scam. Oscar Wilde said as much all the way back in 1891 when Vladimir Lenin was still in his 20s.

does he actually get a tax break? you don't get tax breaks for donating to a 501c (4) or whatever the fuck superpacs and shit are.

The company wasn't given to a 501c, it was given to

a specially designed set of trusts and nonprofit organizations. They were created to preserve the company’s independence and ensure that all of its profits — some $100 million a year — are used to combat climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe. (NYT)

      There's no way it wasn't a tax-deductible gift.

Yeah it's the Bill Gates move - put all the money in a charitable organization that you get to control, basically. You as the head of the foundation own nothing while it gives you free reign to use its real estate, private jet, sexcrime island, etc.
