Cigarettes have no redeeming qualities. At least some shit like heroin makes you feel really good. Nicotine just makes you feel slightly better, but then permanently worse until you either use it again or quit long term.

EDIT: For context, I smoked for ten years and quit a little over half as long ago. This is bitter ex-smoker talk, not nagging do-gooder talk.

Unambiguously good. Full stop. All y'all who are calling this nanny state shit need to grow up.

Cigarettes have no space in a sane society. They are tremendously harmful to people's health. Not just those who smoke but anyone anywhere near them and even anyone who spends time in a room where someone has smoked (third hand smoke, Google it)

Obviously trying to ban them out of nowhere won't work so this phase out makes a lot of sense

Good, cigarettes and cigarette smokers can fuck off.

Every time Ive been to some place that says "Oh pwease dont wear perfume that can trigger headaches and sensitivities in some people" without fail theres some smoker dickhead that comes in fresh from having smoked like a pack, stares at that sign and ignores it, then gives me a massive headache just from being in the same room as that reeking shithead.

Fuck boomer tourist but also fuck you for smoking in public.

That blatant disregard for others health is unbelievable. How are you a leftist? For real tho...

Cool, but why comment on someone that has an actual medical issue with this? I wouldn't comment about being car brained on a post about someone who's actively disabled and can't get around without a car. This is just crass and insensitive. But good on you for messing with foreign boomers.

we do get that sort of thing a lot

Not enough, clearly. You make the environment around you measurably less safe, having people point out that your poison stinks is the least you should have to worry about

I don’t smoke anymore (cloud gang) but I would put it out.

Most perfume makes me turn lobster red and start itching but I never had the balls to ask somebody back off because of it either :edgeworth-shrug:

Unironically: The way I kept my children from picking up smoking is by telling them that smoking is extremely rad and cowabunga. And then every time they went to a social event I'd say, "Make sure to smoke a lot of weed and hash cigarettes! That sounds heckin' dank!"

I didn't do this on purpose, mind you. I'm just autistic and say any word that enters my brain hole if I'm not careful. My kids' friends are all xXxsTr8eDgExXx now.

Ok it is not an actual struggle session it is just people getting baited by the one reply comparing smoking to coffee lol(I stopped reading there too).

This is cool and good, fuck cigars, nobody is going to be 50 years old with lung cancer and look back saying "man I'm glad I had the chance to smoke 3 times a day for 20 years, no I definitely wouldn't change anything ever if I had the chance to go back".

If anyone legitimately thinks that they can go fuck themselves with cancer alone, leave don't force society to indulge in your selfish harmful behavior too. /rant.

Also its funny to me, last week on hexbear:

"We should do all in our power to use the power of the state to [ban harmful product] because it will ruin peoples lives, be used for revenge porn and displaces jobs!".

    This week on hexbear:

"We can't let the state simply [ban harmful product] because checks notes this is just prohibition and... and it doesn't work, and... and it what about the [other harmful product] are you going to ban that too?"

Yes this is a joke, it is not even the same users, but it is funny to me.

NZ probably can't do much about climate change on its own obvs, fair though that they obviously could be doing more to mitigate damage and prepare for it beyond selling land to credulous rich people. Maybe they're playing the long game, sell the land, get paid to build the bunker, take it over when shit hits the fan before the billionaire fly over lol.

They could build some God damn trains. If Laos can afford HSR, New Zealand can at least afford some decent rail links.

This improves quality of life and eases clogged up hospitals. Even if you're going for the whole 'the world is dying let us have some fun' there are a bajillion better drugs/lifestyles to occupy yourself with.

With the gradual legalisation of weed, makes sense for an actual cruel drug to fuck off

The French government committed a terrorist act on NZ soil when they blew up the Rainbow Warrior. I don't think NZ would be too upset if the French got mad.

I do believe in safer access to drugs but honestly out of all of them I consider cigs to be among the worst drugs :shrug-outta-hecks: Like should we legalize meth or should we make it free to get anti addiction meds and so on

Both. It being illegal doesn't help anything and again probably just makes it worse. But of course addiction treatments and fixing the social and economic causes of drug abuse are the actual solution.

My thing is like, ok, we give drugs to people who are already doing them and the supply is sketchy and maybe unsafe if we don't. Alright, cool. Legalization would also help with gathering statistics on the issue. But we also have the issue of making it more available for people who are curious first-timers, which is not good when your goal is to reduce addiction rates. I could see a situation where its legal if you have had it tested in your system before or something. This would effectively kneecap suppliers while also reducing the number of people exposed to it.

But another thing is cigarettes don't only harm you, it physically harms anyone around you too. So its different from just shooting up in your own home, shit even smoking in your own home restricts the supply of safe housing. In this way smoking is worse than other drugs because it can cause environmental hazards.

I'm sure part of the reason making shit like heroin illegal doesn't work in the slightest is the fact it's fucking heroin. Cigarettes are not nearly as addictive in terms of the feeling they provide. I'm not disagreeing with your point though.

Cigarettes are horribly addictive, it's the habit. I have seen people quit because they were pregnant or switch other nicotine things, but never quit outright. A guy (an anecdote ) once told me that quitting heroin was easier than quitting cigarettes. At least to him.

Prohibition doesn't work because the system doesn't provide alternatives or support networks to allow people to ramp off.

Now weed is getting more legal- I can't imagine people willingly choosing hyper addictive tar with literally no benefits over chill weed.

Maybe the near 1 million people that die yearly from second and third hand smoke have a right to live their lives too?

I don't even agree with banning cigarettes, but if you want to use arguments like that, it goes both ways.

Ive seen quite a few people choke to death from COPD, and its not a very cool way to die. The people are always very scared and in a lot of pain. I see so many smokers with chronic, lifelong, eventually fatal health issues from smoking. Cigarettes are absolutely barbaric and should be banned.

They don’t even get you that fucked up

It’s not about being fucked up. As a former smoker and current vaper, it’s almost literally the only stressor I have any degree of control over and as a byproduct of that the stress I can’t control gets relieved as a knock on effect of the addiction stress being overcompensated for when relief comes (yay our brains are totally logical)
