James Cameron says steal weapons from the US military and use them to fight for indigenous rights
I will not be responding to any haters and losers who don't like the film because theyve confused leftism with being a miserable contrarian
Death to America
Jacobin had three different articles about how actually avatar was bad and people need to stop having fun.
Average Avatar Hater: :wojak-nooo:
Average Avatar Enjoyer: :soviet-chad: Yes Mr Cameron, unlimited genocide on the Amerikkkan devil :soviet-chad:
The world where I find myself explaining to my parents on the way home from the theatre that "it seems to me the series is being set up to send the (correct) message that you must take up arms in order to kill the colonizers in an act of revolutionary violence" is a little better than the world I was living in prior to December 16th
Tbh I think people who don't like Avatar see it as a standard white savior movie. I thought it was an ok movie at first, until I heard the Chapo Trap House episode on it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7CtTo88QOI). When the boys analyzed it, I realized that the themes go much deeper and it made me appreciate the movie. It's actually not a white savior movie because
spoiler
the main character ceases to be white by the end of the movie and completely gives himself to revolution, unlike a white savior movie where the main character always has the option to go back to white society and can move between the two societies with ease. By the end of Avatar 1 the main character willingly gave up his former life, not just in lifestyle, but completely as a human being.
After listening to the chapo analysis of Avatar 1 and then watching Avatar 2, I can say the movie is fucking fantastic. Even better than the first.
The analysis on that episode really was good. I do think a lot of people would enjoy it more if they saw it like Matt did
our boy needs the views https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqDnpQVnICc
Man this guy really just literally copied and pasted the chapo analysis didn't he? There's like almost verbatim words and phrases straight out of the chapo avatar analysis...
Well what person confined to a wheelchair wouldn't want to become a big ass blue alien who runs faster than Olympians with ease.
the whale is so fucking based. risks its life to kill literally dozens of yankkkee imperialist scum o7
Death to America
same. JC is the only man on earth who can get Americans to cheer for the deaths of us soldiers. he's a genius
Death to America
It's cool. The whale hunting sequence is basically Cameron's remake of Jaws except the humans are unequivocally the villains. You literally have the marine biologist who is the exact same character. Insane aussie harpoon guy getting his arm ripped off was the highlight of the entire film
yeah the jaws parallels were awesome, I honestly don't know how he resisted the temptation to work in a line about "you're gonna need a bigger boat"
Death to America
Aussie whaler flying through the air next to his arm was probably my favorite scene.
Why do people have strong opinions about Avatar? It doesn't seem like a movie worth having strong opinions about.
Because its exciting to see a big box office film that has real vision behind it when theres really been nothing but marvel schlock for the past 2 decades. Its fun to enjoy things and get excited about them with other people who enjoy them.
Idk why avatar haters are always malding about it. Most I assume just want to be contrarian about whatever is popular.
The whole "there are no memes therefore no cultural impact" thing is so wild. There are a bunch of avatar memes and they're hilarious.
We can only have one movie where the bad guys are burning down trees for capitalism. A million and one mafia/war/super hero flicks? No problem.
Its fun to enjoy things and get excited about them with other people who enjoy them
I think this was also my favorite thing about Dune. People were posting stuff like "Dune rocked. The movies are back" with replies like "Frankly, it's discomforting that something good has happened" and it sort of elevated the whole experience
Thinking that a movie doesnt deserve having strong opinions over is a pretty strong opinion about said movie
Honestly love that they swapped out unobtanium for sentient whale brain juice so rich people can be immortal, lot less gray (lots of chuds and libs tried to justify humans actions in the last film as "solving" the energy crisis) and more "rich people are fucking vampires and will consume a sentient species to obtain immortality, so for the love of Space Tree God kill them".
The one hour of them exploring the tropical paradise section was really enjoyable. The water navi designs were good too.
Look I'm not taking a side until I see it, hopefully it's still playing when I'm no longer infectious and someone on Tinder takes me up on my offer to make a date out of getting super high before seeing in 3D
Is there a secret deal for each Hexbear user to make a thread praising Avatar after watching it? Is this where the film budget went to?
it's the newest culture war for the Cultural Posadists trying to push teaming up with cetaceans to blow up imperialist forces onto our children :pog-dolphin:
smh they should know we will only team up with indoor cats this "Jake Sully Whale Time" flick is nonsense
i still don't know if all this avatar love is just a leftist meme or not. i swear the chapo boys were giggling the whole time. never seen any of the movies and i generally like scifi. am i just falling for a psyop??? :stalin-stressed:
not a meme. idk to what extent the chapos are being ironic in their love for avatar/James Cameron but idgaf, he's an excellent filmmaker
Death to America
They’re hyping it up to a small extent, but it’s also a great anti imperialist movie. Only movie I’ve ever seen where people in theatres cheer/clap for the death of American soldiers
The movies are mostly inconsequential candy. The unspoken principles of the film are leftist and that is rare. So it is enjoying a treat and not having to stress over it being subtitle fashism like every single disney movie. It is just really good low art. People are unused to seriously praising low art so it feels weird. Our instinct is to want it to be more than it is. However it is part of one of the biggest film franchises on earth so this is a good sign.
What is the definition of "low" art? What are the other kinds? Just curious.
I mean depends on what school of art history you ask. High art would be art ment to educate, or inspire. Low art would be art ment to be fun or entertaining. But I am sure you can find many other definitions.
So, like, movies about french emotions and how cool it is to be rich are high are. Films about explosions and having a nice time with your friends are low art.
I appreciate that distinction, but those both sound like examples of low art from your definition.
Also from this definition you could call exploring the emotions of cultural/ecological destruction and resistance to it high art.
I'm just happy to see a blockbuster movie that feels like it was made by a human with a real vision.
Watch Avatar 1 and then listen to the chapo episode where they analyze it (trust me the chapo analysis is worth it). Then go watch the second one (and maybe listen to the chapo analysis on the second one as well).
never watched 1 but did listen to the new chapo episode all the way though. i'm now convinced they are serious and enjoyed the analysis. also i've listened to some cameron interviews and totally get this "modern napoleon" thing. napoleon with no military skills who's a radical environmentalist instead of a anti-monarchist radical liberal
I've watched the first movie many times, it's excellent for having something on that requires almost zero attention to watch while I play a game. If you're expecting a riveting story you're gonna have a bad time, but the forests and animals with built in bisexual lightning are fun to watch.
It's like a three hour nature documentary with snu snu cat people and whales and also they shoot space americans. I think a lot of people just turned their brains off and enjoyed it.
