I'm guessing the idea is that the game can potentially act as spyware and send back data straight to the Russian government, so Putin can send a missile to every Ukrainian IP address playing the game

man imagine if the russians could go on OSM or google maps to figure out their random civilian houses to missile strike, that would be really bad

Also this war is really serious and Ukraine is getting slaughtered and on the verge of winning you guys

A paranoid security focused government doesn't need much of an excuse to shut it down. The simple fact that it portrays the USSR in a neutral or positive light is enough given their definitely not Nazism inspired de-communism campaigns. Someone might remember that most Ukrainians actually liked and wanted to be part of the USSR towards the end.

:ukkkraine: We're not banning it, that would be undemocratic, we're just asking private corporations to do it for us!

I am big mad that when you click the report button on steam there's no option for "GABE THIS IS LITERALLY GLORIFYING HITLER WHY THE FUCK IS THIS TRASH ON YOUR PLATFORM?!"

I mean, that wasn't due to some deeply held ethical position. Blockchain would mean that Valve no longer controls the flow of hats.

It still would. It's not like the games themselves are hosted on the blockchain, Steam is still the centralized bottleneck. If you have an NFT of a hat, Valve can still tell the blockchain game devs to remove the in-game item associated the NFT from someone's account and while the player might keep the NFT, without the hat it's worthless.

Also ban CoD and Battlefield because it allows you to win as Russia. Alternatively, you can only win as America and allies and china and Russia is hardcoded to always lose

That "your perspective is always the same" function is actually really nice, I remember Battlerite had it so every match felt consistent. It's just that the game you're thinking of is a really funny and pathetic way to use it.

In the near future, the American and Russian fractions are too woke/political/insert broad spectrum strawman term. So the only good guy you can play in COD is china because they are neutral in everything.

      Also market

        Zelensky compared Putin to Voldemort

Putin invoked Rowling when speaking against cancel culture in the west and how it should be prevented in Russia

Rowling herself got pranked by Russians pretending to be Zelensky and saying she'll remove the lightning bolt from Harry Potter's head because it's a Z lol

"We also urge limiting the distribution of this game in other countries due to its toxicity, potential data collection of users, and the potential use of money raised from game purchases to conduct a war against Ukraine," Bornyakov's statement continues. The "potential data collection of users" part of this sentence refers to a previous statement on developer Mundfish's website, revealing it would collect data from Atomic Heart users on behalf of the Russian government.

When asked by GamesRadar+ for clarification surrounding the collection of data, Mundfish said this was an outdated portion of their website, and denied the data harvesting completely. After the statement was issued to GamesRadar+, the entire section of Mundfish's website pertaining to the data collection was deleted.

    Not a great look tbh

I mean, most companies whose services I use on a daily basis gather my data on behalf of the US government. I don’t really care what the Russian government does with my data, they don’t have cops that can drag me away like the US does.

It's probably a lot more relevant to Ukraine. Even simple stuff like peak playing hours or amount of time played could prove to be useful to intelligence analysts, especially if anything is personally identifiable.

Pretty much every always online game collects telemetry from players. Sometimes startlingly specific, personally identifiable information.

That said, it should be trivially easy to see if the game is sending out information or not.
