TikTok is not bad because of 'disinformation', all forms of media are filled with 'disinformation' (even academic journals, le gasp). TikTok is bad because it is an incredibly aggressive engagement formula that manipulates you and your psychology.

You should know that, Hank, because so many of your videos follow a format to use that algorithm, but that would be giving up the game as a 'content creator'.

Clicking. Commenting. Engaging with their app as opposed to all the other ones.

It's an attention economy, it's not anymore complicated than that.

All social media companies run A/B tests which identify the parts of their design that give your brain a second to rest and consider whether you want to continue using the site. And then they remove those parts so your engagement is more “frictionless”

My lib friend sent me a video of this guy explaining, a few months ago, how amazing Biden's infrastructure bill was. I watched the entire thing out of respect for my friend, then wrote and self-published a lengthy essay about why Green was wrong about everything (which no one read, pretty understandably since the subject is ridiculously boring). But goddam, this dude is unbearable.

Also, complaining about conspiracy theory videos on tiktok when you almost certainly believe in Russiagate.jpg.

I'm so glad I didn't have to learn about the CIA killing JFK to advance corporate hegemony into West Africa and Latin America from TikTok. That would have been the fucking worst.

I just learnt it now from hexbear. Until now I just assumed the CIA did it without needing to know the particulars of how or why, just seemed self evident it's the CIA ofc they fucking did it.

I mean, there are enough ambient crazies in America at any particular moment that I'm happy enough to believe JFK got off'd by a single disgruntled asshole.

But all the extra bits and pieces of the story paint a very different picture.

i don’t think i’d be a marxist leninist without r/cth, definitely “left” and almost definitely anti-capitalist in a sense but i would definitely not have that theoretical framework to base that off of and for that i’m forever grateful

i only remember that sub shitting on trotsky though so that’s kinda funny

Mercury Stardust and Jory (aka alluringskull) just raised $1.6 million for trans healthcare a few days ago. Social media is good at fund raisers and it used to be good for event promotion. It’s not about the tech, just about the filters that a company goes through as they face public pressure from corporate-owned media. Old media wants YouTube to push SNL skits on the front page. Finance capital wants OnlyFans to cool it on the humanization of sex workers. Advertisers wants Facebook to be a little less mask off with enabling white supremacists because it’s fucking up their branding.

TikTok’s main strength is that it’s newer and its algorithm is more aggressive, which means it has gone through less of this kind of scrutiny and it will be able to speed through more cultural churn in the meantime. Capital incentivizes the acceleration of the speed at which people pick up and drop cultural trends. It’s fast fashion, but for everything.

Nothing, but unless you, or anyone else in society, has an alternative for young people to engage in immediately after TikTok is banned, then they're just going to flock to the next big app and then everyone is gonna complain about WalmartClips or whatever it'll be called. It's one thing to critique social media, but it's another thing to think you're above it and that the dang kids are always on their itouch when all you offer is... nothing.

I don't think TikTok is good by any stretch of the imagination but it's VERY ODD to complain about this when there's a bill in the works that gives the executive new faculties to literally ban any social network and heavily punishes petty shit like using VPNs and that is mostly backed by yellow peril and red scare rhetoric

It’s really funny to me that there are people who know Hank from individual projects he’s done and nothing else. I guess I never considered that someone might think Hank was given a PBS show about dinosaurs because he was an expert on dinosaurs and not because he used his success as an early YouTube vlogger to launch a career in science communication.

Hank and John have dozens of projects, most of them focusing on charity efforts and science communication. A lot of the science education is really high quality and is used by teachers I know in their classrooms. A lot of the charity stuff is well intentioned but ends up coming from a very neoliberal worldview because that’s just kinda the nature of charity.

Under no circumstances should anyone go watch John’s video on the history of the Soviet Union. Like, I’m begging you to not watch it. It will not turn out well for you.
