Yeah, I'm very much not a movie/tv watcher, so DUNC: 1 was probably the first show I'd enjoyed in years. I'm deffo excited for DUNC: 2

Its definitely because I love the books so much, but I'm okay with that.

I feel like theres two valid ways to go if you love the books and thats loving the movies because youre just so in it, or reflexively hating the movies. TBH both are valid, Im the first, Ill eat this slop.

Regularly? Nothing. I used to watch stuff my friends watch, to have stuff to talk to them about, but as I've grown older, I realized I didn't actually like any of it. So I've mostly stopped. I give some shows and movies a chance sometimes, but I'm rarely interested. Just tryin to remember most recent show I liked before DUNC 1, was probably Mad Max Fury Road.

For my chosen media slop, I tend to play video games or read books.

looks good but if part 2 doesn’t really convey the point of the story and paul’s character then i will be thoroughly disappointed in villenueve.

He's meant to be sort of satire, right? Not actually a hero, but a parody of sorts more like Hitler who is worshipped by millions and causes the death of millions more.

satire is one way to put it, i would say more of a warning from frank herbert about charismatic personalities who use power structures in society to gain power and do terrible things, their actions then feeding a cycle of tyranny and violence.

People that say, "Oh, dune's just another white savior story" are kinda right. Except, its a deconstruction/critique of 'white savior' stories in a lot of ways. Like, the book's theme is that what Paul is doing is fucked up. Though, its not overly stressed in Dune book 1; its not uncommon for people to miss that point. I do feel like the hammered home a lot harder in books 2 and 3; anyone who doesn't get the point that Paul's actions are shitty, won't really even get the plot of them, and will probably just drop the series.

because the first movie didn't really portray the point, a lot of people recently discounted dune for being a glorification of the "white savior" which is really sad because it is indeed a deconstruction of that trope and warning against people who try to embody it. just one of the inherent faults of adapting the huge amount of text herbert wrote for the story arc lol

Paul freaked out when he ingests the spice in the desert about seeing himself lead the crusade, he was angry that so many were killing in his name, I think you just need to know the whole story to catch it which is too bad.

Dune is not a white savior story because Paul is Greek-coded

Paul never wanted to be worshipped, it just sort of happened. The sequel books go more into how he feels about the jihad that started because of him and the overall consequences. we definitely need the next two books to get the full effect of the story. Book 4 is pretty much it's own book, then book 5 and 6 are tied together.

this. the second and third books are absolutely necessary to understand the point of paul and the whole first book. thats sort of what makes me worried about the second part of the movie here, because theres no way we're getting a part 3 or something lol

based on the success of this first book/movie(s) i think there is a good chance we get books 2 and 3 in one movie. Maybe its a two parter as well. They could just end it with Paul being victorious and never getting into the actual philosophy because that makes people think too much.

i guess i have too little faith in americans to believe in anything other than a two-parter with all the philosophy removed.

Did some research and I believe I have been lied to some IRL dune fans.

“If things go well with Part Two, I could foresee the idea of maybe doing … Dune Messiah. That would make sense to me,” Villeneuve says when asked about his career plans.

Here is a timestamped link of an interview where Frank Herbert (very briefly) explains it; though he's specifically talking about God Emperor of Dune / Leto II here. I think the right way to describe it is as a subversion rather than a parody or satire.

This is supposed to finish the first book and do the entire second book so it should get that point across.

Damn, people on this site really dislike these movies.

I enjoyed it and haven't read the books. I liked the sense of scale of all the machinery and architecture. Some scenes were goofy and cheesy. I liked the music.

    Not watching the trailer though

yea it's funny cause by all accounts it seems like most people liked it, but us leftists seem to have some race to see who can be the most counter culture until they are just watching Yoko Ono art pieces.

I had a great conversation with two friends over brunch a few months ago about how great the first movie is. Both of the guys had never read the books, but they loved the movie. I'm looking forward to this installment. I never read past the first book because the rest of the series looked like a bummer and I was fine with just leaving things where the first book left off, but if they keep making movies I may have to read the rest of them.

it is amazing how well the movie did. 90% audience score on rotten tomatoes, i feel like half of them probably didn't read the books. im still mad they skipped the banquet hall scene though.

I was surprised by how much my friends loved it without ever having read the book. But they were going on and on about all these elements of the movie and how much they loved it. It's a small sample size for sure, but they said they felt drawn in very quickly and it did a really good job of building the world without being too heavy on the exposition.

I read the book after seeing the movie and that part was one of my favorites. It sucks they didn't adapt it. It would've been nice to establish a wider range of characters and factions.

they didnt explain anything about his backstory(omitted a scene with him and Jessica) and they never explain the history of Suk doctors(they are supposed to be conditioned to not be traitors). Here's an article that explains it better than i could: https://collider.com/dune-fails-dr-yueh/

This reminded me that they cut a lot from Jessica also. Her role as the prime suspect in the search for the traitor isn't really in the movie.

I'm gonna go see it, and I hate (modern) movies.

I really like that they made the ornithopters actual ornithopters. Usually the movies make them into some kind of jet fighter or something lame.

I hope all who are fans enjoy it, but for me personally I look at this and it looks kind of boring. Not because there's not enough action (I'm not really interested in action movies either), just that I can see it's supposed to inspire awe but I care so little about the characters from the first film that I'm not awe-inspired at all. I also find the colour palette rather bland, being that it is on a planet made entirely of sand and rock. I think this is the sort of thing that's nice for people who liked the books, but people who haven't read the books are unlikely to get much out of it. Again, hope the fans have fun, but I think I'll pass.
