I find the only tolerable ones are the subgenre of queer/furry/ND ones that use the Vtuber model as a mask rather than a personality, tbh

Yeah I think one of the most popular ones (CodeMiko) was a woman who didn't want to show her face so she developed the whole thing to just stream the digital avatar.

Why even go to the effort though for just an avatar? Streaming was a mistake.

Pretty sure there are Vtuber avatars covering every single anime waifu subcategory including "oneesan"

You'd would probably have a really hard time finding black or brown avatars though

Almost all of the popular ones are clearly, clearly coded as schoolgirls. Easily the most popular one was Pikamee and she was quite nearly a loli.

The target audience of the vast majority of anime are schoolboys so this shouldn't exactly be that surprising?

Of course there's a significant 20-40 incel audience as well which is pandered to. But given the largest market for anime is "shonen" (literally meaning young boys) I don't think it's a huge stretch to say this is probably the largest audience of vtubers as well.

The Disney channel isn't making shows with adults as the lead characters either. They're always teens because the target audience is teens.

Yeah I was teasing some people on reddit but realized that they're actually like 14-16 years old so it's not actually that weird for them to be watching a similar aged anime grill.

Disney generally isn't in the business of sexualising their underage protagonists with panty shots, revealing outfits and jiggle physics though

This'll be a merch thing. Disney's target is parents when it comes to merch sales, whereas the anime industry's merch sales come from the 20+ audience who spend a ridiculous amount on collectibles.

If Disney's merch sales were primarily coming not from parents but from oversexed incels things would change.

These are vtubers we're talking about. Evaluating serial shonen manga or whatever is a little bit different.

I think the biggest anime is technically Hello Kitty, but that's a little off topic.

Disney isn't selling figurines of schoolgirls with highly-detailed upskirts.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that the industry doesn't also knowingly pander to pedophiles. Just that the majority target audience actually is teen boys and that's the main reason that every character in every anime is also a teen.

These are vtubers we’re talking about. Evaluating serial shonen manga or whatever is a little bit different.

And, like, that still doesn't really justify the gratuitous sexualization of minors. Like, is getting teenage boys horny really such a deep societal need that it makes it more okay to depict teenage girls in such a sexualized way? I don't think those boys need the help, they'll get horny just fine on their own, and that has the added benefit of not flooding popular media with scantily-clad cartoon schoolgirls.

Not to dispute your general point, but I never got the impression she was anywhere near the most popular. Pretty well-known, sure (not an expert on vtubers though)

It was my understanding that she was, but maybe it was just that she was so much bigger than the other people within the company she was signed to. She's not the worst, there are others like Kurone or the shark girl or . . . well, genuinely most of the ones with any audience are schoolgirl coded. I've only seen a handful that aren't.

I like Korone, at least from the clips I've seen. It's very clearly an exaggerated goofy cartoon performance and she's not going for a horny angle. Wouldn't watch for like 8 hours at a time but it makes for fun clips and animations

Korone’s not really that horny at all

              Her model is

              nor a school girl.

Do adults look like that in your experience, minus the dog ears? Or do you think someone's only a schoolgirl if they're in a pleated skirt?

Her breasts are not abnormally large, she's showing a normal amount of skin, and neither the way she moves or is dressed is overtly sexual.

Her face looks youthful, but not like a 5 year old. I definitely know people with that kind of wide eyed expression in real life. Her clothes are also pretty normal, it's a dress and a sweater with some colorful decorations.

You had your slam dunk with Gura, and you could extend to Laplus if you wanted, but korone is just not that weird and isn't pedophilic.

Pikamee is/was in the middle tier of VTubers who have made it (it remains to be seen where she'll stabilize with her new form). Looking at her YouTube stats, she pulled in the range of 1-2K concurrent viewers---most streamers would kill for that, of course, but it's still a far cry from the 10K+ concurrent viewers and crazy merch sales you see in the elite tier. There are hundreds of VTubers with her raw stats. I think it's more that she had one super viral clip near the beginning of the VTuber boom in 2020 and was one of the first big Japanese VTubers proficient in English, making her a "bridge" between the two communities and giving her outsize brand recognition.

No worries, the VTuber community is pretty isolated so it can be confusing if you're not already immersed (and even then my knowledge of the JP/corporate side of things is relatively shallow)

She wasn't sexualized. None of her models were. Also the person behind the voice, a woman, decided she was ok with it. Some weeb girls are ok with lolis and think they are cute in the way that people think puppies are cute and do not want to fuck them. But I still stay away from that shit.

Probably worth making a distinction between "moe", the hypercute smol animu girls, and loli which usually has a sexual connotation, coming explicitly from "Lolita"

In Japan Lolita is also the name of a fashion style ( very frilly dresses) so I think loli came from that and not the book. In English though it's probably referring to different things

Like in the anime Oshi No Ko there is one girl who is a bit taller than her senior at school, who she teasingly refers to as Loli-senpai

Off of the top of my head, the only VTubers with brown avatars I can think of are Ironmouse (Puerto Rican) who has a few models with tan toggles, Sylphy (German voice actress who is (half-something?)), and Scarle (half-Mexican, half-Filipino). Unless there's some super popular Nigerian VTuber or something that I just wouldn't have crossed paths with, I genuinely don't think there is a single prominent VTuber with a black avatar, although obviously black VTubers exist. It's hard enough being black in the anime community (see: anime nerds flipping their shit whenever a black person dares post cosplay photos), but I'd guess it's even worse in the VTuber community. Plus there's the added difficulty of finding an artist who will actually make you a black avatar and not just a generic anime avatar with dark skin.

A vtuber that is a real character and not a waifu would be amusing. I've wondered about if anyone will do a "Nyarlethotep plays" where they are a horrible mass of mouths and tentacles holding a controller and playing, like, Rayman or something.
