Pretoria Boys High, where Elon went to school, is a school located in between one of the richest suburbs in South Africa (Waterkloof) and one of the most prestigious universities in the country, the University of Pretoria. These would have been all white areas and schools during apartheid. There would be no kids to commit hate crimes on at school or at home. Apartheid was a vicious system of segregation down to the millimetre. The only black people Elon would have interacted with would have been workers in neo feudal conditions.
Anyone in such a situation wanting to commit hate crimes would deliberately have to go out of their way to do so. And some did (see the AWB).

I think after that incident he changed schools to Pretoria Boys High School, probably was bullied for being a nerd as it's an all boys school crazy for sports like rugby, with the highest school fees in the country. They are basically British colonial schools in South Africa, so much closer to German schools in Namibia than anything else. There are quite a few black learners, but it doesn't change much. I linked articles about the one Musk went to.
Mine had plays with blackface and Indian face, certain parts of the school were called shit like the boere wall, Taj Mahal, black tree, etc. And an official award for the token black kid that embraced the school culture the most. Soccer was also banned. I attended during the 2010s.

Public schools in South Africa are actually the cheaper "government run" ones, some are even free. Their are plenty of private schools here with more expensive school fees than Pretoria Boys High.
Pretoria Boys High charges such high fees because it's a public school trying to compete with the super expensive private schools around the country. They don't want to lose their public school status, so they can't go private. I think they have partnerships with Eton and Oxford in England as well lmao.

Which is also crazy because a select few public government schools, usually ex model c schools (a term for a school that was whites only during apartheid) can charge super high fees to compete with the private non government ones with facilities and so forth.
