It's a tricky prospect, trying to balance hate speech and distinguishing it from someone simply expressing bad thoughts.
I guess I'm someone who came with a lot of poor, preconceived notions, and it took some time, patience, and radicalizing to arrive where I am today.
I've had some pretty awful takes over the years and said insensitive things, but it's other comrades who turned me on to better ideas.
We don't need bans. We're joined together by the power of cyberbullying.
Plus at some point trolling people who are just yelling "POST HOG!" over and over again loses its charm.
You guys just banned like a half-dozen people for defending a trans woman's right to not have her opinions mocked and experience erased.
OP is right, you guys are much more interested in carrying on the Reddit dudbro mentality than you are in building any leftist spaces.
in b4 I get banned and deleted for pointing out that it's wrong to erase trans experiences.

Please explain how it's against the rules to tell a trans woman they have a right to be heard and not dismissed as a cishet man for having a differing opinion?
And of course you're not gonna reverse any of those bans and probably gonna ban me, but just letting you know your whole ass is showing.
Making a post, expecting it to be ignored since that's typically how Redditors behave.
But please explain, if you "don't think that's what's happening there", what rule was broken? Is asking someone not to lie about what you said breaking a rule? Is expressing an opinion that some people are too aggressive and unwelcoming with their insults breaking a rule? Is saying trans women with differing opinions deserve to be heard breaking a rule?
I'm fascinated to hear how any of those posts breaks any rules aside from "getting too uppity".
Made a post, and not a single mod could produce a single evidence of transphobia from the accounts in question. Not even a bad example, literally couldn't provide anything.
Then locked the thread when it was clearly they had no evidence to produce.
Cowardly, petty shit. The Chapos were right about the sub; you nerds are way to petty and needlessly vindictive to be anything but a detriment to the leftist movement.
Peace, have fun with your next idiotic circle firing squad.
Also going to point out that I know for a fact at least one of those people you banned is a PoC, but we all know how happy white Reddit mods are to throw their authority at brown people who get too uppity. Some habits don't die, huh?
Fourth user was just banned for, apparently, disagreeing. No slurs, no telling others to kill themselves. Just banned for disagreeing.
One time I introduced someone to a leftwing discord and there was a little test to get posting permissions and it was literally just "What do you think about capitalism?" and she said, "capitalism is dumb." and got jumped by people scolding her for using the word "dumb" and just said fuck this.
If you've never been banned from a leftist space, did you even radicalize?
Being banned from r/communism for not having been born a fully realized Marxist-Leninist is pretty much a chapo tradition lol
You have been banned from r/Communism for supporting Lenin in an obscure Lenin-Stalin argument from 1923.
Isnt r/communism on some kind of "ban drugs and video games" NazBol shit right now?
I'm not sure, but I was banned by a bot for having previously commented in Bernie subs. From what I've seen, the bot bans you instantly upon your first post if you've ever posted in non-ML leftist subs.
Before that they were banning people for saying "dumb", before that it was catgirls.
Oof. At least theyre not on that r/CA type shit, banning people for "extreme indifference to injury/death".
Like what, two people got banned? And they're still free to make a new account if they want to come back? I have complaints about this website but the admin team is not one of them
grrr then i have to use my fingers to scroll grr unpaid emotional labor grrr
I got banned from SRS for asking a question about libertarianism and ended up a communist. Honestly curious people won't get banned or will lurk and learn. Right wing assholes do not deserve a platform here. It is the paradox of tolerance.
Honestly curious people won’t get banned or will lurk and learn.
if your first interaction is a ban I guarantee they won't lurk afterwards. I had almost that exact same experience long long ago when I was a teenager, went into a socialist forum cus their politics seemed like something I liked. Was banned after like the 2nd or 3rd comment for saying something nice about liberals, cus then I didn't know the whole hate liberals thing that socialists do. Took over 10 years before I was even willing to listen to another socialist, cus to me it seemed like a ideology that wants good things but is totally authoritarian and unwilling to work with or accept anyone different. I know of at least one other person who had a similar experience. It can't be that uncommon, as one of the main criticisms of socialists I hear from libs is that socialists are cliquey and assholes to anyone who slightly disagrees. They're not entirely wrong sadly.
Did you seriously think that was my only interaction with socialists? Basically every other interaction was similar, with them being aggressive and dickish to any kind of outsider. It's not as bad these days but still is pretty fucking bad. See here....
edit: I guess the guy deleted his comment but if he sees this, this exact conversation is one I had all those years ago. again this was maybe 06-09ish, can't remember for certain https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/je5p9v/lockdown/g9deyf5/
It took me between 2011-2016 to open myself up to socialist theory after SRS banned my dumb libertarian ass. But I can guarantee you that having to debate the 400,000th Libertarian on reddit to try and change their mind would not have been effective. I was dumb enough to say “national socialists were socialists” as far back as 2012-2015; that conversation would have literally led nowhere.
I truly mean it, the people interest in theory will lurk or go off and read stuff on their own and that’s fine. We do not have a way to convert people to our side. It has to be their own conditions that helps them see the “light”.
Well that's not what I was talking about. I wasn't a libertarian but already sick of the democrats about a year after getting into politics after my 18th birthday, a progressive democrat. And still had people jumping down my throat. I mean hell it's not some crazy thing to say socialists forums are often shitholes, look at how many people get banned from so many of the reddit ones before the right wingers won and banned em all.
Nah, ban em.
It's been shown over and over again that communities benefit from just getting rid of the shit from the get-go rather than allowing it to fester.
Maybe I’m oversimplifying, but I feel like it’s pretty clear to tell when someone has a bad take vs uses a slur as an insult.
I don’t think there’s any interest in banning someone who accidentally used a problematic word without realizing it. When it’s used in bad faith it’s usually more obvious
Part of the problem too is that some people spend way too much time on shit places like 4chan where people use f*g and the n word liberally even when their heart is in the right place. It takes time to for these people to understand that it's really not that cool
To be honest i was banned on the discord for a really dumb fucking reason. It was really disenfranchising and undeserved and it was honestly a bit upsetting because the discord was a small bit of light in a pretty hard time in my life. i really enjoyed some people i interacted with on there.
i am glad this place doesnt seem ban crazy. give people time to move left and if they're just constantly stirring up shit and nothing else then yeah reconsider. but let people down the pipeline even if they have bad habits and bad thoughts that die hard
I messaged you a couple weeks ago but never heard back - maybe you'll see this - Does chapo need more development help? I'm a software dev and not working and it would be fun to contribute
That reminds me of the time a mod personally called me out by username on a post which led to me receiving insulting DMs and yet nothing was ever done :)))))))))))))))))))
yeah, i believe banning fascist and the 100% terfs is fine, but libs and some reactionaries should instead be collectively bullied in submission
I think a pipeline would be better than throwing libs and fascists in the deep end. If you create different stages, then well-intentioned people can progress though them while the problem users stay contained in the early ones. Easier to moderate and easier to focus resources on well-intentioned people.
Where chapo should fall in the pipeline is open for discussion, lol.
you mean here? I think mods should be way way less ban heavy. Hell I got banned twice on the old CTH for shit the mods misinterpreted and then wanted to fight about instead of hearing my reasons or thoughts. hell once I was talking about a human nature kinda thing and the mod banned me for every and went on and on about jordan peterson. IDK who the fuck jordan peterson even was at the time, had to look the douche up to see what the mod was even talking about. Finally another mod lowered it to a week, but yeah leftists can be emotional assholes to other leftists. It's like the main thing that leftists do, attack other leftists. If we have to put up with the dengists and stalinists then people can put up with some democratic socialists without throwing a hissy fit
edit: after reading the thread it looks like the mods got it well under control
i remember back in the day i got banned for a week for a soros funding joke lmao
