Xenia, the fox girl mascot of Linux, was first designed in 1996 by Alan Mackey. She was meant to be an alternative to Tux, the official mascot.

She had fallen into obscurity, but was noticed by a Twitter user in 2019 and was redrawn as a fox girl. But as it turned out, Xenia was originally meant to be male! The original creator, Alan, was cool with this, saying "It matches the transition of a lot of the smartest, nerdiest Linux users I know" and "And sure, you made her trans!".

So now we have a trans Linux mascot. And I think that's neat.

Goodnight comrades, here's part of the code of conduct that i think about alot

Be aware of your own enjoyment of the site.

    • If you find yourself no longer having fun, do something else. There are many different comms on Hexbear, and many different ways to shitpost and have fun.
    • If the site as a whole is just not cutting it for you, take a break. We'll still be here when you get back. Nothing should compel you to stay.

I often think about dead comms and how to revive them. Anyone have ideas on this? We could use more variety anyways.

I've thought it would be nice to revive some dead/less active comms as well, although I don't know of any comms specifically (which also means I have no ideas catgirl-huh).

So DIY is one I’d love to see more active. Howdy is one I mod and it was always bound to to be less active, given it’s role as a place for introductions, but I’d like to brainstorm a way to pick it up a bit.

I know I'm kind of necroposting replying at this point but the reason I don't post on DIY more as someone who loves that kind of thing (besides laziness and forgetting it exists) is not wanting to doxx myself with photos of my desk or workbench or whatever (or like, here's what kind of apartment I live in, or what model of car or bike I have, etc etc).

But I think I could achieve enough opsec to be happy (maybe have a segregated account just for DIYposting idk) and have posted a bit of DIY-ish stuff in the past. The DIY electrolysis machine has been pretty inspiring but my posting would mostly be little tweaks and mods and special interests probably. I also need to take pictures of things while I do them lol

Howdy might be tough to get more activity on, unless it's purpose expands or it becomes a rule to post there upon making an account (which people should do anyway, it's fun).

DIY has potential, but it depends on how many people are working on DIY projects. For some reason, my brain went to DIY HRT when you said that, btw. I guess I'm that trans-brained...

I've thought that c/writing might be cool to focus on, but similarly to DIY, it depends on people actually working on projects involving writing.

So, at least for the latter two, their existence can be broadcasted to more users via c/main or c/CTH, and Howdy could have forced participation (I've seen users introduce themselves on c/chat). I thought about maybe having it be a way for users to introduce others to certain topics or interests, but it's a deviation from the comm's original purpose, and it might overlap with other comms like games or literature.

One idea I had is to make it a space for “introductions and updates” basically a place to introduce yourself OR toot your own horn and brag about something cool you did or whatever. A space to talk about yourself.

For some reason, my brain went to DIY HRT when you said that, btw.

Why not encourage DIY HRT posts? Would be perfect for talking about recipes and such. If they try to restrict HRT, would be cool to lay (more of) the ground work for underground networks that make the stuff.

/c/creepy also has a ton of potential in my opinion. Could expand to cover horror in various media as well as stuff like true crime, occult, paranormal, etc.

                :waow-based:

                updates

This is a wonderful idea, and would be a great way to expand the comm. I would definetly post about some big things going on when they happened. I could even do a reintroduction post, a lot has changed since the days of the EcoMaowist [comrade/them, they/them]

c/creepy is one I always forget about, but it could be such a flexible horror comm. I'm not much into horror (although I kind of want to be), and I can imagine there's a lot of people who would be interested in those topics.
