That is more cases in a day than China has had in total.

You're right, my bad for using a lib source that doesn't include Hong Kong with the rest of the PRC.

IMO how competent heads of state appear has little to do with it. So many Western European countries are currently eating shit worse on a per capita basis, with regards to Covid, than the U.S despite most of their leaders having far better resumes/ appearing more "Statesmanlike" than Trump. Hell, I'd suspect that if the U.S was currently run by president Hillary Clinton, the difference in total cases would probably be less than 10-20%.

yeah I think there's a lot of reasons China's government is slightly more competent than the US's, Chinese politicians make much less on average than American ones, and iirc Chinese politicians have to spend time in rural areas before they can advance in the party. The government is also set up in such a way that "corruption purges" are still possible, unlike the US.

Yeah this is going to get way worse. All the public will to do anything is gone. People are tired of it. There is nothing we can reasonably do now anyway. Libs think biden will fix this but that's not possible.

People think this election means anything anymore when the Republicans already won when RBJ died lmao. I find myself rolling my eyes whenever I hear people around me talk about how hyped they are to vote. They're just setting themselves up for disappointment in 2022 when the Dems fail to do anything and Republicans steamroll them in the midterms and next presidential election.

Lmao if Biden wins, the 2022 midterms are going to be a bloodbath. Biden will have accomplished nothing so the dem turnout will be super low.

That's exactly what is going to happen.

Not only will Biden accomplish nothing, he'll help Republicans with their agenda. He's already said he'll confirm the SCOTUS nominee they chose and he wants to appoint Republicans across the government. He isn't going to do jack shit about the wealth inequality or any of our growing problems, let alone COVID. He don't even support lockdowns.

The most he's going to accomplish is stuff that will piss people off.... Like bringing back the individual mandates to Obamacare, or pushing austerity and raising taxes on us. Or his WTF gun control platform that is only going to royally enrage southern states.

People talk about acceleration and I don't get how they overlook this with Biden. He's going to put the pedal to the metal to fascism.

the dads I've met in life are in two camps, nice old dudes that love their children + grilling, and guys that are complete assholes to their children in the name of "tough love"

I am an amateur dad-surveyor so my anecdotes may conflict with yours, however

My dads the former. Used to be a hardcore republican, then chilled out on that, and in 2020 he voted Green Party. Lifelong anti cop and I watched him argue with a cop over a bogus speeding ticket lol. Pro union but wary of the big unions of being too in bed with the corporations they’re supposed to fight. Pro education but wary of those who see themselves as above manual labor because of a degree. I dunno, I used to dislike my dad but he’s grown a lot and now I really respect and love him. Give him the body of a 20 year old and the soul he has now and he’d be body slamming cops lol.

My dad's given me more space and patience after seeing how bad my depression is, which is cool. But the first few weeks after moving back home were pretty dicey.

Edit: I do wish he'd cool it with pushing Jesus on me every time we pass, though.

absolutely, you either see your children as part of yourself and they make your life better/worth living, or you think they are in need of hard lessons as if the world isn't full of them already.

Fucking hate that this is like a new normal here. Every day live in fear that I'm going to catch it at work, or if it's not me, it will be my parents, girlfriend or other loved ones.

Assuming a mortality rate of 0.4%, it’s approximately 352 deaths.

Case fatality rate is 2.7%. KiaKaha I think is referencing the infection fatality rate, which adjusts for undiagnosed cases.

But these are known cases so the best estimate for future deaths is the CFR. So we're looking at 2400 deaths

Depends. It gets lower if you account for all the asymptomatic cases.

Sure but this is odd known cases so like the person above said since these are known cases it's not going to be 0.4% of those.

Depends how the cases were detected—but yeah the 0.4% was being optimistic.

I'm confused as to what you mean? Cases are recorded through positive tests sent to the CDC. (maybe after going to the white house first? I can't remember if they stopped doing that or not).

Testing requirements vary from state to state, but that's how cases are detected and how they derive the numbers.

I mean, if tests are done by random sampling, contact tracing, or by mass testing a la Chinese cities, then you get a whole lot of asymptomatics registering as cases. If you only test when people present at hospital, you get only the worst cases.

Its 3% for over 65-s. It's never been 3% for all positive cases
