I had an ex that "hated" subtitles.

any non-english movie needed to be dubbed or was vetoed. I wasn't allowed to have subs for Chris Nolan-type movies with ridiculous sound mixing either when the vocals are super low. they said I was going deaf and should be fine missing some dialogue because "it doesn't matter". I said maybe they had a literacy deficit.

    we didn't last.

make an english movie with subtitles that change language every time they show up and have no explanation for that, it just happens in the movie

There was a game on the Xbox 360 that was like a parody of Doom, Duke Nukem and common game industry tropes. It wasn't very good but one of the things it did was only print the game manual in a different language than your native one. So all English copies had Spanish game manuals in the box to confuse gamers and further the bit.

Honestly ruins my suspension of disbelief. These people are making noises that don't make any sense and I'm supposed to just assume they understand eachother? Just put a little bubble on the screen that tells me when they're supposed to be speaking in a different language but cut the crap I know those aren't words

Netflix is using AI to dub stuff in the target language, including changes to the actors’ mouth movements to sync with the target language
