This is the main problem. There are little hundreds of people that have been involved in this for tens of hours. At least 30 of those people would have spent these hours on growth and outreach for the site.
The waste of workhours that could be going towards something actually useful is ridiculous.
On the plus side, it has simply highlighted the need for some more robust tools to deal with this kind of abuse and additionally that public-relations and time-management are factors to figure out. The team can't have so many people being sucked into this stuff.
