Aha, but term limits weren't removed. Thus by the strict criteria that I have just convoluted, Merkel doesn't count. You fool. You fucking moron.

What even is the point of term limits other than undermining democracy?

Dead on considering they were only introduced in the United States to ensure that an FDR couldn't happen again

Right, there's someone eligible to hold an office and the only reason that the citizens can't choose them as a representative is because of an arbitrary rule made by state bureaucrats. You know, "democracy".

I can't say I'm really that upset about it here in the US. Lack of term limits here would just mean Obama would be president for life. Sounds like a special kind of hell tbh.

It's a measure bought in to help make sure you don't have an entrenched political elite.

It could work I guess but frankly in a liberal democracy it's like using a thimble to bail out a sinking cruise ship.

My dumbass fucking father just continually harps about how we need "term limits" to fix corruption, (I think people on Fox News must talk about it). I always ask him what the difference is between donating $30K over six years to one congressman and donating $10K each to three congressman over consecutive 2 year terms, and I never seem to be able to get an answer. Term limits are for marks.

The biggest thing term limits have accomplished is keep anyone vaguely left from holding power for too long. Term limits are a fuck.

Answer: Idaho introduced term limits to all state offices after a 1994 winning ballot measure introduced them. Then, in 2002 the State Leglislature struck down the proposition and removed all such term limits from the State's government.

Unless the Neolibs claim that Idaho is a dictatorship, I have owned them by their own logic and surely they will have no choice but to admit that they were wrong?

Uhm, excuse me but that logic only applies when I want the US to conspire against a poor country

The Democratically elected Supreme Court of Bolivia agreeing with Evo's argument that Constitutional term limits don't apply retroactively is clearly the definition of Dictatorial.

Oh what the tyranny of the majority elected supreme court siding with the tyranny of the majority elected official, surprise surprise. Just sounds like some dictatorship of the prole masses if you ask me.

I wish Bolivia Supreme Court was more like America's, where 51 people alone get to decide at anytime who will get a lifetime appointment to the second most powerful position in Government.

it means if someone has been in office for say 3 terms and then there's a law saying a person can only have 2 terms then the 3 terms before the law was passed don't count and that someone can still do 2 more terms

my comment is hard to process in one sentence so here's a timeline:

        1. a person serves 3 terms
        2. a term limit law is passed
        3. first 3 terms don't count so the person still gets to stay for 2 more terms

Remember: The only reason the US has term limits for president is because a social democrat was so popular that he got elected 3 times.

If a lack of term limits is not inherently dictatorial, then it makes me wonder what specifically makes removing existing term limits from a position inherently dictatorial.
