I started HRT instead

(But he also rips into China about censorship and Xi's insecurity, so I assume he's cancelled around these parts)

So this is probably a good spot to talk about the transphobia, right?

Cos I'm maybe not super far in the game but I've seen only one trans-coded character (edit: maybe not trans but certainly gender non-conforming) in the game so far and holy shit (transphobia ahead). The character looks like this and the game goes out of its way to try and make you think they are the very worst person you come across (in a game where everybody is irredeemably shit, it's notable that they go so out of their way on this one). And they really play up their (unspecified) sexual deviancy as a motive for their actions. And your character and your colleague are constantly calling them "freak" - at one point you ask them what someone looks like and they say "just like some guy, like you and me" and your character responds "probably doesn't look like you, freak". Then at the end your character is given the default dialogue option to punch them to death - the only character I've seen where you get this option.

Yes I think you're probably right, I've edited the post. For a game that was touted as being very LGBTQ+ positive, it's astonishing to me that this sequence made it to the final version. I'm sure the g*mers will say "ack-tually it's not homophobia because the character sexually assaults women, haha checkmate sjws"

UUuhhhh holy shit I did not realize it was that bad. In a world where everybody replaces their arms with lightsaber-knife-things and their brain with silicon how could people think somehow the trans folks are the "freaks"?! Not only is it transphobic as fuck, it's bad writing and world building. Imagine living in a world devoted to body modification and still giving a fuck about "gender" lol

Right? Like there's all these ads for porno with a woman who modified herself with three mouths so she could suck off three people at once, but some gender ambiguity is where your character draws the line?

I was surprised the clubs were so vanilla, I mean minimally you'd expect people to conspicuously display modifications to signal social status.

I’m nearly 100% positive that he’s called a freak and ripped into so hard because he does shitty botch jobs on desperate women, and glorifies the pain and suffering he inflicts on his clientele. He’s definitely gay coded, and there can be implication, but I will say I interpreted it as more of a serial killer type freaky than a ew efiminite gay man type “freak”. It’s definitely not good, but it’s not nearly as egregious as the poster is making it out to be.

HAS ANYONE ELSE ACTUALLY PLAYED THIS DAMN GAME?

He literally rapes and sells a character to people who kill people and scavenge body parts while also taking advantage of other sex workers in need of help, THAT is the reason they give you the option to beat the shit out of him, don't think killing him is even an option.

They even made him sell one of the best upgrades in the game later that YOU CANT GET if you punch him, making you choose if playing nice with the asshole is worth getting it later on.

I did that mission fairly early on, and it felt intense and I went "wow, that was intense and fucked up, can't wait to see whatever weird ass shit I do in terms of threating to beat people to death" and uh.. that was it. Nothing came close to that again.

The game doesn't even have a heart to be in the right place. Johnny is a Piece of shit, V can be okay, Judy is cool and is not important to the plot, the only good people involved in the plot are the Nomads. Hard to root for anyone really.

You forgot to mention the no pants, because Chinese people are all sex pests. Also the no shoes (in the house). Pooh is also chunky, so it's fatphobia too. Hair? Is that a callout to Asians generally being less hairy?

This is a common talking point when you bring up Winnie the Pooh. They always deflect the conversation away from authoritarian censorship and surveillance to bigotry. Calling card of shills everywhere.

I don't see why anyone would support a clear racist dogwhistle regardless of country of origin/target, I feel it is not unreasonable to be offended here.

It would be pretty racist if you started portraying every American as looking like Trump and I wouldn't be against banning/censoring that sort of content. To support this is to say it is ok to be racist if it is portrayed as "criticism" of people we don't like. What is next every German must be angry and have a mustache? What year is this 1950?

But it seems Jim doesn't know this or doesn't care enough to think critically from a leftist perspective about this shitty racist meme. It seems freedom to be racist is very much acceptable on their book so what else should be said? Perhaps there is some projection going on and they think a meme about the leader of a nation with 1.4 billion people is some very valid and constructive criticism that must be protected? Either way that "speech" has consequence is something even a child should know. I wont cancel for that because I don't watch the content for the shitty political takes. The content is just entertaining and it is important to have that anti-corporation voice.

The "poor" devs? Sorry nobody is entitled to a business. Their opportunistic intent was very clear. I feel bad for the workers who may be having a tough time. But the company and that game can go fuck themselves.

What about the Chinese netizens? IMO no they should stop caring so much about what others think specially westerners and their racist memes.

The point was about Jim not this community though and there is some historical context as well regarding the obvious skin color racism and how Asians were generaly portrayed(small eyes) and there is no excuse here imo Jim should know better.

Yes there is some truth in what you point out about this community and western leftists but I think it is pretty clear "death to America" is not a call to genocide the US population, stuff like " :xi-plz: " isn't a serious call for WW3. When the right memes about racism I definitely think they are more serious about their intents.

Probably referring to the game Devotion, which got kicked off GOG and Steam because the Taiwanese developers hid some a xi winnie the pooh image in it, and created a backlash with Chinese users.

Their previous game was called Detention and was a really good side scrolling horror game, dealing with the past authoritarian Taiwanese government.

I imagine we're looking at a classic case of Brooks's law where they kept on throwing manpower and time at a problem that could be solved only by increasing the latter and holding the former steady.

Brooks's law is an observation about software project management according to which "adding manpower to a late software project makes it later".According to Brooks, an incremental person, when added to a project, makes it take more, not less time. Adding more people to a highly divisible task, such as cleaning rooms in a hotel, decreases the overall task duration (up to the point where additional workers get in each other's way). However, other tasks including many specialties in software projects are less divisible; Brooks points out this limited divisibility with another example: while it takes one woman nine months to make one baby, "nine women can't make a baby in one month".
