I'm a VP with a biggish company. Every year, the first week of the year the senior managers from across the US fly somewhere warm, play golf, shoot guns, sit by a beach or a pool, get wasted, ham handedly try to cheat on their spouses and have meetings about how to take more of your labor value. Obviously due to covid that won't be a thing this year, and instead the conferences are virtual, so me, and a couple hundred other ghouls who already make six figures + got shipped huge snack boxes, boxes of booze and received $500 credits at door dash. The CEO just gave his kickoff presentation and, with all the money they saved from not paying for travel they're giving away ten k worth of Amazon gift cards and a brand new Tesla. So just who is eligible for this windfall, you ask. The hundreds of warehouse workers who couldn't work from home, the truck drivers out on the road, installers and sales people exposing themselves to covid every day? Nah, us couple hundred ghouls already making incomes in the top 5%. Can I just guillotine myself and be done with this already?

I’m more interested in how a communist became VP.

Actually, by abandoning hierarchical structures, sourcing solutions from the people closest to the work and convincing my bosses that cheaper was rarely better, especially wrt labor.

I've found simply ignoring higher management directives (like screenshot/webcam-taking timetracking), lying about it, and letting my team members work as happily and comfortably as possible gets me higher productivity and more promotions, while the MBA ghouls I've found myself around flail wildly wondering why turnover is up 200% and productivity is down.

there is not one job i have worked at where the job wouldn't be better by having my management just stop doing literally anything unless i ask them for help first

I don't really care if they're productive as long as I'm not fired and no one bothers me so I can keep posting. That's my management strategy, "Do whatever needs to be done so I can minimise human contact. If something is going to make me have to talk to people if it gets worse, tell me what I need to do to stop it"

If that means they can play Eve Online for 30 hours a week, cool. If it means they disappear to a beach for a week without holiday approval, cool.

A maximally effective manager is one that doesn't need to do any work. Managerial labour is a symptom of a workplace flaw.

We have embedded agents and subversive cells all throughout society. They will activate when the code is given.

Yeah, it was the latter. Something just clicked one day when I stopped looking past the swathes of umhoused people in the bay and I realized that I only had what had because people had to live like they did. Eventually I was watching a bunch of cargo ships go under the Bay Bridge and extrapolated that to the rest of the world. Kind of hard to unswallow the red pill.

Good on you for making this realization when it was against your bests interests to do so. It's heartening to see that it is possible.

As for what you should do, definitely don't guillotine yourself. In your position, I'd fund the most radical leftist groups I could find, domestic and otherwise. I'm sure there are more considered responses elsewhere, of course.

Honestly I can see being able to see clearly through all the corporate bullshit giving you an advantage over people that actually unironically buy into the corporate ideology, since, you know, it has no bearing on reality at all.

I’m an AVP and been working at my job for 3 years (first job out of college) and at least half the people I work with are VPs. It’s not meaningful title at my employer, but were not in the class of people who get to go on these kind of retreats.

In all honesty I’m just really lucky that my school had a good career services department with connections to major companies in my city so I was able to get an internship where I did literally nothing and got offered to come back full time after graduating.

Also being a white woman makes it easier to get hired in tech for these kind of entry level roles at dinosaur companies.

Yeah, you can absolutely be a VP at a bank and not even make 6 figures. Those people don't get invited to these kinds of retreats though.

infrastructure! food water sleeping arrangements places to exist internet and health, physical and otherwise.

if you're strategic, and you try to deploy these things without restraint, you can make a huge impact that will keep making its impact over and over again. how many fucking comrades here are trapped in bullshit jobs? freeing just one or two up to do work that matters is a big deal. to organize or build systems for when capitalism falls. or to help it fall.

OP has access to corporate infrastructure she could piggyback on, my crime brain says you could do SOMETHING with that, not that I have any god damn clue what.

but, I mean, what's the point of selling out if not to feel hollow and shitty?

So we're currently owned by PE, but they're looking to sell/PO in the next 2-3 years. I'm constantly peppering the CEO with research on improved efficiency in co-ops and employee owned business. If they end up going public or selling to more PE I'll absolutely torch the place.
