Slow sand filters are a good way of purifying water. All you need is clay, silt, sand, gravel, fully charred wood, and a bit of time. Granted, they don't filter stuff like lead so well, but almost every place on earth has the materials needed to make one.

Thank you for your consideration comrade. I actually have bought a quite cheap carbon filter last year, but I still drink boiled water just in case and out of habit. Well, at least as a consolation for selling out our clean water sources to western food companies, the government have the decency to tell us to cook our water.

I had a lucrative white-collar job, a nice apartment, decent furniture, investments, etc. I quit and sold everything to spend more time writing leftist screeds for publication, participating in / photographing protests, radicalizing my friends and family, organizing, and shitposting. Now my finances are more dire and it's harder to get a date but my God am I freer

I've got dried beans and a crock pot lol, I've put together a decent kitchen set over the years. It's the only reason somewhat attempting eating on a low budget is sort of possible.

Without it it'd be a whole different story.

depending on where you are consider dumpster diving. if you have good dumpsters, you can survive solely on that. its not neccesarily comfortable, i mean in reality you are for sure going to want to buy salt and stuff like that at least, but you can survive on very little this way. if you have good dumpsters even if you have an income its nice to save some money this way, sometimes the food is perfect. where i live currently im blessed with amazing dumpsters, and i always at least check when im walking by. you can literally just find like a shitload of free potato chips sometimes, you enver know. some of my friends even found a six pack of tall boys once. but you can also find some nice meats, hot dogs keep especially well but depending on the climate you can sometimes get high quality shit, produce thats gone ever so slightly out of date, anything really. so not just junk food either although thats often whats most sanitary and accessible

it is potentially a great resource. and i think someone should eat all that shit anyway. at the very least a bag of donuts or whatever is a nice find if you cant afford any food

Tell me about it. I’m in a PhD program and the people around me are making under 20k in one of the Most expensive cities in the US, constantly exploited by their PIs and advisors and admin and still can barely be talked to about unionizing cuz they are brainwashed into somehow thinking it could be worse. Smh. I just wanna finish and be done with academia forever. Some of the most obnoxious people I’ve ever met (as one of said obnoxious people ) but also some great comrades so it’s a mixed bag.

Honestly the masters students are worse than the PhDs. At least the phds can pretend they’re doing work to better the world and not just paying a universitat tens of thousands of dollars for a piece of paper to tell other people they’re better then them

One of our comrades here, CrimsonSage hope I got her name right, mentioned that universities are basically manners school that teach you how to dance and mingle with the rich. She put it better but that was the gist. Thanks for backing this up further being on the outside you only get the message that these people with degrees are you betters pauper, so bow down. Still I will respect whatever knowledge and skills you worked on there, don't wanna diminish the work you did and expertise in your field. Sucks to hear about those being exploited there, guess they have to fully buy into the neoliberal lie I suppose.

Yeah on the one hand you’re right, devoting your time to a topic and field is good and should be respected as a learned person, but somehow some people still have the worst fuckin takes. It really depends on the field (with obvious exceptions).

It’s funny cuz I’ll shred the academy to bits with other academics but if people who have never been to college try to shit on higher higher ed people I get kinda defensive. Something I’m working on.

I think someone we can both hate is Jordan Peterson. I'll listen to him if he sticks to his field but he rarely does. He likes to bleed over his status to everything else which annoys me. Or Ben Carson brain surgeon and politicaian, btw is he dead haven't heard from him in a while. Nevermind anyway I think this the idea of anarchy no unjust hierarchies or something. In your field I'll refer to you but in everything else we equals if that makes sense and your opinion is not worth more than mine or mine over yours.

yeah i'm really of two minds of it all. Do i think an expert in one field is an expert in all? no. But generally speaking there is something about 'devoting yourself to knowlege' that gives you a different mindset than someone who has never gone to school and is actively ignorant about the way the world works.

idk it's just really frustrating when people dump on academics because they don't know the 'real world'

I might be speaking out of my ass but the way I think is that one way of learning isn't the only way. I like the scientific method but I think maybe our learning is steeped in white supremacy and imperialism. It assumes that the only advancements comes from Europe and everyone else are just superstitious rubes that don't know anything, happen to get lucky, or needed help. Even nowadays I remembered western doctors down playing the warnings coming from let's say Vietnam about covid.

As for institutions here they exist because and for legitimizing capitalism. Mainly thinking about funding both who can go there and who controls what research to be done. I know peeps can get loans and grants but wonder if this gets them invested in the current system in order to pay off debt, I know most of my friends have to take any job now.

Full disclosure the highest I could go was community college, ran out of financial aid and dropped out since I didn't wanna do loans. I still try to think and learn but it's not easy and I get where you coming from. Once again I don't wanna discredit your work or experiences it's just truthfully I'm a little envious of you and other peeps that got to go to higher learning. Maybe this is where those dunking on higher learning are coming from but I'm just speculating.

i totally agree. there are so many issues with academia and higher education. i completely agree, which is why i am of two minds of it all.

i do think you can learn all the things someone learns in college by yourself, absolutely, but it takes that mindset and push. i have plenty of comrades who only (or never) went to college or anything. it doesn't make their opinions less valid than mine.

I guess i'm more speaking of the people who critique higher ed from the other side than you. who assume college is a communist conspiracy or whatever, when its basically the opposite.

Yep. That's the scam trend. They consider it a "luxury" with a monthly premium attached.

            Granite countertops? +$100/mo
            Dishwasher? +$100/mo
            Microwave? +50/mo
            Convection oven? +$200/mo
            Fancier fridge? +$50-$200/mo
            etc

And a dishwasher is great, but it's increasingly harder and harder to avoid these "renovated" apartments, and their jacked up rents, because landlords realize they can spend an extra grand or two on something to justify squeezing out 10-20k or more over its working life.

Second hand cast iron pans are very much cheap and available. I work in kitchens and steal from work (Got a Vitamix by taking the parts of two broken ones and putting them together) and that can totally be a thing, it's where I got pretty much all my kitchen gear.

never thought of Cast Iron as expensive, if you're in the city like me, most stores have them on sale for like 50% off, just keep checking their online flyers. Managed to score a nice one for around $20, and have been using it almost every day, and a nice non-stick patina has built up. Also bought a non-coated carbon steel Wok from walmart for around $20. Same with cast iron, just keep using it and a nice non-stick patina will build up. Teflon will wear out, and it's a carcinogen. Cast Iron and Carbon Steel will last a life time, just apply a thin coat of oil after every use.

There's a weird vibe from that big thread earlier today from the VP humble bragging about how she gets all these benefits.

I made this post mostly because I'm a bitter poor that can't even afford my own rent and mental health care at the same time.

So to me, being the bitter and resentful poor person I am, being pro-rich is pretty close to anti-poor.

Legitimately, for a real response, I don't see how that post was a criticism of the upper class.

She just sort of complains about being incredibly privileged and goes on to describe holiday bonuses. We all know they exist, and we all know her people exploit the shit out of the poors so they can indulge to their hearts content.

It felt like she was jerking herself off while trying to convince us that she was somehow still marxist.
