Supply chains are being disrupted in the USA and I feel like no one has talked about it since the initial shortages in March. Grocery shelves barren all the time of stuff that was in abundance before

Idk, worrying

Protip: go to the international market. Immigrants don't panic like libs and chuds. There are few if any shortages at the 3 or 4 local global stores in my area.

i shop at an asian place because people are being super racist rn and refusing to buy there. plus side is its owned and ran entirely by a family so if theyre exploiting someone its all in their own blood.

Hell, I LOVE my local Asian market. Tiny ass family owned business that somehow offers extremely competitive prices on basically everything. I can get everything there for dirt cheap, even shit I could just pick up at Fred Meyer. Plus they got all the fancy, good ramen. I honestly have no idea how they keep prices so low but I don't care. It's a great place

this asian market is pretty big actually but their entire extended family runs the place (including grandparents), i prefer it over kroger and stuff though they sometimes dont carry things i need

Thats a good reason too. Plus MSG is like 1/8 the price of what it sells for at your regular chain.

Yep, its sporadic, but there are definitely more shortages occuring. Not total outages, but store being forced to have empty shelves from a lack of buffer & produce that would have been tossed as "too ugly/ripe/unripe/notplasticlooking" being stocked.

Oddly(or not i suppose) in my neck of Burgerland the major supermarket chains seem to be having the most visible problems. Smaller Farmer's market chains are doing fine.

Not sure. I heard about some teamster/dockworker strikes a few months ago, but I haven't heard any updates.

What's the best way to stock up on food for a few months? Big bag of rice, beans, bread flour, some frozen chicken?

    It seems to be regional.

I work in 3-4 different counties over the course of a week, and from what I've noticed grocery stores in poorer neighborhoods seem to be experiencing shortages more. Especially within the last 2-3 months. Dunno about anybody else, but I started noticing shortages in things other than cleaning/disinfectant supplies, like raw produce, after Thanksgiving.

In Denmark we had a few days of shortages due to panic buying at the start of the pandemic. For a few days meat, dairy, yeast and toilet paper were hard to come by but once people realised that supplies were continuing as normal they stopped panicking. Stores rationed baby formula for a few months afterwards and OTC drugs are still rationed to one package per type of drug per customer. Hand sanitizer were in short supply for a while until production was scaled up.

During the pandemic I have noticed weird specific shortages, like for a month or two it was impossible to find cumin, even in the middle Eastern store where I use to buy spices. Currently there seems to be a shortage of sesame seeds. Other specific shortages might exist but I haven't noticed.

In general Denmark is one of the better managed capitalist countries and we've been cushioned from shortages. The government had emergency plans ready and worked with the food industry and unions to avoid panic, keep the stores stocked and avoid price gouging.

The panic buying days were a little scary. In a few isolated stores fights broke out and the police was called. It was a reminder of the old saying that civilisation is only af few meals away from anarchy.

Yes. It's super random shit too. Like one week they had no ketchup. Literally none. How does something like that even happen? Next week the ketchup is there but now they have no frozen vegetables. Sort of have to get a bit creative with things. I'm privileged enough and good enough in the kitchen that it's been sort of a fun challenge many weeks when I'm not actively trying not to have a panic attack because I'm in a grocery store with bunch of other people who are taking their masks off to cough.

It hasn't hit my immediate are yet. I'm in one of those fucking places that mostly lucked out and lots of people haven't really felt the pandemic and all of the related troubles, which means when it hits us we'll be especially fucked from how ill-prepared we are.

Among the stores I shop at, one of them is a bougie Whole Foods competitor run by a big brand in my area. They have better selection of produce and the produce prices are generally the same as the regular store the company runs and it's closer to my apartment. I was there on Sunday night and they were straight up out of eggs. It may have just been nothing and they hadn't restocked from weekend shopping, but it was pretty wild. I usually buy the Certified Humane eggs and those are almost never out because they are a bit more expensive. They seem to have rearranged the produce stands a bit differently to cover up that they don't have as much vegetables at the momemnt, but it's hard to tell if that means much since it's winter. They have a shit ton of citrus right now, which they always do at this time of the year since it's in season.
