The Desolution of Yugoslavia

"socialism is when IMF loan"

The history of Yugoslavia since 1945 embraces a period of rapid economic, political, and social modernization reflected in urban and industrial growth, improvements in literacy and economic well-being, changes in the traditional patriarchal family structure, moderation of ethnic hostilities, and integration into the international economy.

However, in dialectical fashion, it also embraces a period of economic decline and intense ethnic reaction. In a very real sense, the route to the collapse of the Yugoslav federation, like the collapse of the Soviet federation, was paved by the policy toward nationalities that each had pursued, but it was precipitated by involvement in the global economy.

How fucked up is it that presidents can start illegal wars and yet Biden can’t even do a mask mandate because that’d be “going to far”? :agony-turbo:

A cool side effect of the pronoun tags is that it has made me aware of how many women use this site (I know not everyone who uses she/her pronouns may identify as a woman, but I assume many/most do). The vibe of r*ddit just always felt so male-centric to me, even in the less misogynistic non-default subs, and I always assumed there were very few women in those communities. I suppose it's just cool to know that this place has such a strong gender diversity.

yup it's a far cry from "everyone on the internet is male until proven otherwise" which devolved into "POST TITS OR GTFO" 🙄

Being on the discord and on here really re-wired my brain with regards to pronouns. Now every time I see someone defaulting to he/him I cringe.

1000%. I must admit before we left reddit I was way less tuned in to trans issues, I’m still kind of a baby leftist in a lot of ways despite calling myself a communist for years now. Unironically this community has educated me so much in that regard, even just interacting with trans people much more than I ever have irl has been great and really illuminating

One thing I eventually noticed is that on reddit I would always use they by default, but I'd switch to he if I was talking about a user that was being an ass haha

Yeah even I as a woman tend to assume these kind of sites are filled with men, but the tags really do prove that it's not the case

I feel this so much! I admit I was anxious about the pronoun tags because outing myself as a girl on reddit had some real bad results in the past, but seeing how many women were on this site was actually super heartening 😊 And you're totally right it changes the vibe, feels more sincere and less like people are anxious about others acting in bad faith.

        :this:

I would always try to avoid outing myself as a girl on r*ddit too. I remember one time someone replied assuming I was a man and I made a comment that literally said "I'm a woman" and just got like 8 downvotes on it lmao

Yeah, I tend to be in mostly-male spaces in general (career and hobby wise especially) so I got so used to thinking of myself as The Token Girl(tm) on reddit since it had the same vibes

lol yeah, I'm a software engineer and there've been times in my career where I was the only woman in an engineering department with 20+ people in it. When I'm actively looking for jobs I like to track the ratio of "guys named <some generic white guy name like chris or matt>" to "all women" that I talk to, guess which usually wins

I'm not sure if many of them are leaving, perhaps some. There are valid issues to be addressed in the context of making people feel comfortable here, but I don't think women are leaving this place in droves perse.

I love my coworker. She’s a sweet and tired mom and not very politically involved. I told her she inspired me to try online dating during a pandemic despite being really bad at all of this stuff and, ya know, the pandemic. She also sees my Facebook posts and made sure to add that I need someone who matches me politically.

So she said “you need to date a ✨liberal✨. A LIBERAL.” She kept emphasizing this. And I died a little inside

I actually don’t know what any of them do because I’m not messaging them back. But it’s literally just “I’m on my grind” or “I’m my own boss” stuff but there’s never any explanation on what they actually are doing? Or I’m just not paying attention because I’m literally just sitting on my couch during Quarantine and doing Bob Ross paintings and I don’t feel anything in common with that.

I’m honestly not doing too well with this lol.

This isn’t a dumb pitch, more an evil one, and from someone I had noooo romantic interaction with. This was an old client when I did freelance writing who actually managed to run an MLM that particularly preyed on disabled folks who need home health care services. And actually was pretty good at hiding what he was doing, enough to fool me and get a cushy state contract that I think was starting to go sour. I don’t really understand the specifics, but he was a huge misogynist who treated me like a dumbass and once it clicked, I drew a pyramid with three levels during one of our meetings and said “oh so your model looks like this?” And he was like “yeah 😃”

Yeah I was helping him with advertising material and he wanted to advertise for home health care workers to work for him (these would be folks that were relatives or spouses who have to take care of their loved ones and receive some benefits from it), because the state only paid so much, and he claimed he paid $15 an hour. He wanted to advertise this. And then he started to get uncomfortable with this, and after months finally explained that they only get paid that much once they recruit someone to “care for” and “be cared for” under them. It was bizarre. And this had to happen a few times before he was even able to get them $15 an hour, which they capped out at. It’s honestly a pretty gross story and he’s a really gross dude.

Sorry I’m high and you got me on a memory now lol

My only good memory of him, because he was also an abusive client and I was fresh out of college so I ran into quite a few, was that he tried to collect money from me later after terminating the contract for labor I already gave. To the point where he mentioned taking me to court and CC’d some other people too. And I was able to write one of those professional-bitchy emails back to him letting him know I wouldn’t be pursuing him in court for unpaid labor. He didn’t respond but I saw him at the grocery store a few weeks after and this asshole ran away from me. Like turned his cart around and ran.

Now I am a children’s librarian and I will never do that shit again lol

Nicotine is a stimulant so can induce shitting, I imagine if your body is used to having at least some nicotine in your system when you shit then it take times to adjust to shitting without it

Anything that is a stimulant will generally help u poo and your body will come to rely on it over time. Same reason why people get bunged up when they quit coffee.

Update from yesterday's post. I'm still compiling a list of resources on trans rights to send to my dad. I don't want to spend too much time on it given that there's a strong possibility he won't care, won't read it, or won't change his mind anyway. He is very stubborn, and you can lead a horse to water, etc.

However, I did manage to convince him to use the correct pronouns when referring to the trans person mentioned in the news article he was commenting on. It's not much, but I'll take a small victory where I can get one.

You ever look at shit like “localism” and urbanism and just get depressed because these are such sad attempts to curb the negative affects of capitalism without questioning the actual logic of the planet-wide phenomenon ruining everything? Like people waste their whole lives fighting for these tiny gains when they could be rallying against the root of the problem. I can’t help but feel that it’s a form of capitalist realism. People who deep down know the real problem but have resigned themselves to asking for nothing or making alternative consumption choices.
