They were celebrating biden, decency and norms returning to the world. I said that there was not that much cause to celebrate. We got into a stupid argument, I asked them to name me policy differences to Bush if there were really worlds between them. I was told that there was no 911 in the last 4 years and Bush was also long ago, so it was not comparable. Then I was told that they disliked my support for trump. lol. Please help me
the absolute worst people still saying it's like the flu when it's statistically NOT even close anymore on top of the flu not being a year round fucking thing. It's insane
liberals on reddit will accuse me of supporting Trump, and then when I reply that he should be hanged, the few that don't just nope away entirely from the conversation suddenly flip to defending him from me
buncha weirdos
hangings can be cruel and inhumane if not done correctly, as implied by the records of the Nuremberg Trial. Firing squad on the other hand...
Who gives a fuck they were nazis lolWhat was almost funny is that it started with "I don't like that you defend Trump" and me responding with"I dislike him, but thats a given, I'm just angry that his opponents do not put up more of a fight" and ended with: well if Ds and Rs agree on many policies, then they should vote together. And me[bemusing and confused] "so you say they are similar?!" - "no, they have some disagreements" in a way that basically said that dems are controlled opposition.
Then tell them trump should be executed in a guillotine after a people's court. That ought to be blunt enough
Since I'm really annoyed right now I might tell them tomorrow that I want him in the Hague, and then I can smugly rest on the respectability and decorum and just ask:so, justice shouldn't be done because it's hard or unrealistic? Curious!
Yeah that's what I usually say around libs instead of busting out the guillotine memes. Gets the point across without Being Weird About It.
What was really wild is thant when I said if the dems were serious about trump being a fascist dictator installed by a foreign power they shouldn't have passed his budgets and surveillance power. Then it turned to: americans have a different history and therefore they don't fear fascists as much.
Also policies don't get wrong because the wrong ppl support it. I tried a nuanced explanation. I was asked:do you vote for a policy because the wrong ppl want it, answer yes or no. I said there was a difference between i.e. minimum wage increase, and surveillance powers and secret police while a person I deem a dictator is in power. (also, maybe one should rethink the latter position, but I digress)
Repeat this three times. I rolled my eyes and said, that I feel I'm not being listened to. I was told I was being ideological and condescending.
Sorry for this long vent, but I am feeling like I'm losing my mind
When we discuss domestic politics they (mainly my father) turn to laughable centrists that say: it's so complicated and I'm no expert (therefore you can't have strong stances) have you event considered many side effects, it can have unintended consequences. Therefore we support [policy of moderate conservatives]. Me: I just proposed minimum wage shpuld be adjusted for inflation Him: But have you considered countries with lower minimum wage Me:patiently explains that these are very small differences in pay for mainly essential work that cannot be outsourced or that wage costs are at least not the deciding factor Him:but have you considered that it's unfair since different plaxes have different costs of living Me:are you just stoking envy between ppl making minimum wage? You literally said everyone should be able to live comfortable from a full time job Him:no no, I just want to give it the nuance it deserves. Fairness is important Me, shakes head: Oh, I guess there we have big differences, I think it is important to have a livable wage, the rest can be figuered out later.
How do your conversations go?
I love the "oh but unintended consequences" shit. It's like motherfucker, take a look around and tell me how those unforseen consequences would be worse than what we have now. To paraphrase the Cush man, where the fuck was this absolute paralysis in the face of the butterfly effect when they decided to invade Iraq?
I would call it concern trolling, but I don't think they're even trolling, they have internalized it
When I started to lay out my view I was told that a) that was long ago b) I was beeing condescending c) they do not now that much about the american system and therefore I have an equally unsophisticated understanding.
That you can dislike two things at once is in retrospective prob the main point of contention
Big mood on c)
"Well obviously since I don't know this, and you're my child, then that means that YOU also don't know this!"
In my experience? Not much, you can keep trying to teach them, but that conversation is filled with "Uh-huhs" and usually just ends with them forgetting everything anyway.
Some other people here have had success with throwing away all civility and bullying them until it works. Obviously you shouldnt do this if you're living with them or otherwise dependent on them.
I'm always shocked at how our brain worms manage to infest the rest of the world. I know literally nothing about other country's domestic politics except China and like a little bit about Corbyn.
Sorry comrade, I'm doing what I can to accelerate the decline of the evil empire.
tbh im a czech citizen and all i do is just vote communist and am mostly tuned out to the rest of it. like i cant even remember the pm's name half the time, i just know he's a billionaire douchebag that likes yes chad memes
wait are you talking about the czech president? because ill tell you what that sounds like good chapo content
yes he made a party literally called yes and if you look into basically all social pages a yes meme is shared at least once
Look at a certain point you have to expect some people are never going to learn. If you want to fuck with them for some reason in 6 months Biden will have continued on Trump/bipartisan policy in a new and horrific way, maybe war with Iran maybe invading Bolivia. You can say I told you so at that point. But you have to recognise they aren't going to learn anything. The people you want to convince are young and haven't had their brains wrecked by cable news.
Bush was also long ago
Ancient history. Bush's legacy has had no effect on our current world. Nope.
It is a testament to soviet science that they managed to transcende time. Tanks in Prague and the wall are eternal.
