Households had refrigerators, but it also had a lot to do with the improvement of processing. Homegenization and pasteurization meant that with refrigeration milk would last much longer rather than spoiling in a few days.

I'm pretty sure there's a similar story with flour, it used to rot pretty quickly and every town had a mill because flour wouldn't make it too far out of town before spoiling (plus demand for quite a few bakerys in every town too). Now we have flour that'll last a year in your pantry because of additives. Not sure when this would have changed, maybe the early 20th century? Maybe even the 1950s and on?

they still deliver milk in Liberal, KS.

and in the heyday of milk delivery you also had grocery delivery. milk was only separate because it was distributed by the dairy directly.

If you don’t have reliable refrigeration, you can’t keep milk fresh, so if you want to have milk on hand, you have to get new milk daily. If everyone in your neighborhood needs milk daily, it makes perfect sense to have a guy deliver it instead of everyone making a separate trip every day just to get milk. It also makes sense that the guy who shows up literally every day would be the one fucking the troops’ wives. It’s all pretty intuitive once you think about it.

It made reusing the bottles a lot easier, other than the refrigeration issue.

Also funny how it's specifically milkman, and especially from a vegan pov, right? Like where's my adult dude who brings my girl cow juice? Idk return to monke and drink your own milk you perv.

    I'm not even vegan :I-was-saying:
