The "gets smeared in the media" thing shouldn't matter. If this site were to get big enough, it would get smeared too.

The hitpieces targetted at the podcasts smeared them partly by associating them with the subreddit. Guess what, to most media people and consumers being a little problematic is far more palpable than being a Maoist or supporting a violent overthrow of the status quo. It's just so funny to think that if the site got big it would have any positive media coverage.

I think it will stay the same. This site was never going to grow, it's too easy to get banned. There is a very small range of acceptable discourse before a ban for reactionary thoughts comes out. No newbie is going to come in already having what this site considers acceptable views, and they won't conform to the sites culture, they will leave.

I'm fine with it, peeps with niche views need their spaces. But those here who think they are part of some "lib to left pipeline" are fooling themselves. This website has never been that.

Any kind of pipeline has to have some element that suckers you in. The gamer to nazi pipeline is just that. You're just an epic gamer that plays le funni games but also while genocide is real guys. Pipelines are inherently fronts.

Consequently for this website to be any kind of lib to left pipeline, you would have to well, attract libs and suffer their dumb shit and slowly simmer them into getting that reform isn't gonna cut it. It means that by definition people don't just get dunked on for stepping outside the orthodoxy (unless they do so in huge strides). So no, this is not a pipeline. This is a sanatorium for terminally online people.

Isn't changing the name capitulating already? Oh if only this site would give anyone a reason to smear it, that would at least be progress

That's the point, like democrats, they compromise without even being prompted, and then they tried to blame it all on poor Gloria La Riva. Like what do they think it's so important happening on this website that the old name was just too problematic for? Rearranging deck chairs.

You have a point, but on the other hand, Coke isn't called Fizzy Sweet Diabetes Juice and it does just fine. Tons of names aren't descriptive, but people figure it out anyway.

On the other hand people hear "proletarian.com" or whatever other overly literal stuff people were suggesting and their mind glazes over instantly because it sounds like some site some trot dickhead would tell you to visit to read all his orgs articles during a protest, people on here are dogshit at branding but complain about it all the same.

Even if you think hexbear is bad its 100 times better than "Please come visit us we have left in our name we are not desperate" shit that people suggested.

That's catchy, but it's associated with Bernie Sanders so people would hate it and call it imperialist.

I know that's the stated goal, but I'm not sure how many people are really on board with that idea. Which is fine, but no point in being unrealistic about things 🤷‍♂️

maybe im built different but i've had very little opinions about both names. Like i see arguments for both but ultimately i think the name change is for the best now that I've thought about it more. I care more about the people who genuinely want to disassociate with both chapo and the idea of a "chapo community." While chapo is pretty fuckin' popular, like almost virtually nothing that is posted here has anything to do with them at all. It kinda just didn't make sense to hold on to a relic of the past. I mean it served its purpose, we got pretty much everybody who was a r/CTH refugee to sign up already, there just isn't a good enough reason to hold onto the name anymore.

I forgot who did the post, I think it was TransComrade69 mentioned she tried to get a labor activist or someone legit to come post on the site and then had to explain a bunch of bullshit about how, "no we're not chapo, we don't have anything to do with chapo" and to me that just says a lot about how tainted the name is.

      how tainted the name is

I'm in favor of the name change but I hope the name is tainted because of the pod/left media grifter/poisoned irony part and not the targeted harassment. Diversity of tactics is important and besides radicalization and pushing folks to irl praxis that's probably the best thing that happens here.

Yeah, I also don't care if CTH gets "smeared in the media". The media is going to smear anything vaguely leftist that gains popularity, so you better practice pushing back against it.

Yeah sorry if I wasn't clear, I did mean the actual chapo name was the issue not the website/THIS community. More like the chapo twitter and old reddit community (old mods and a few other users!) I still listen to chapo every now and then but like I can skip 10 episodes and just not care, so it's not important to me in the least. I think my issue was I just didn't care enough because I didn't really see why people who wanted it changed wanted it changed so bad. So that was just me being ignorant and letting myself have a blind spot.

Oh yeah I remember both the OP and TC69 recounting their hesitance (it was a PSL rep). It's just there are two different (though overlapping) vectors for being worried about the name, and it was never clear which.

To be clear, it's shitty when anyone from CTH stans to channers to qanon boomers do targeted harassment. But it's still a valid tactic in the pursuit of liberation.

i'm out of the loop for that targeted harassment stuff? yeah that sounds really bad, i guess i missed this part though

It's one vector for where the rep comes from. If one of the podcasters gets called out for punching down they call in the dogs (like most folks in edgy media).

It's also why dunk_tank posts that are screenshots without links get a 'link the tweet lib' response. So folks can go dunk.

Targeted harassment is a useful tool against oppression. It's also a useful tool to oppress. But hating the tactic and not how it's directed is about the same as being a pro-gun control leftist. Under no pretext and all that

No I did. Pretending sending that sending threats to randos online is a useful tactic in the liberation against oppression. Seriously? Yeah this definitely isn't the site for me.

early-2000’s PHPbb forum vibe, in a good way.

Idk why but it took reading that to realize I haven't enjoyed a website this much since pre-web2.0. Earlyish reddit came close though. It's always been a cesspool I was just less critical then

I agree. CTH had a time and a place, the formative years particularly got a younger demo passionate about politics. They got a lot of people to pay attention and question the status quo.

But today, we need the next step. They don't really offer any solutions, have no concrete ideology or definitive action beyond criticism, and tend to fall back onto the "oh, we're just entertainment" sentiment when things get too real.

This place tends to fall back on "we're just a shitposting forum" when things get too real.

We should never take ourselves too seriously, but it's fine to recognize that the internet is where a ton of people get their news and political opinions.
