Let's have another good week everyone
The matrix chat was full of computer dorks all night so uh, I installed W11 on my desktop because default, gaming, whatever y'know. I'm really thinking about putting W10 LTSC and some Linux distro on there though, maybe even just Manjaro again but Idk. 11 sucks soooooo badly. If I had a linux desktop maybe I could order some programming socks...
How could you do something so heinous .
"How much worse can it be than 10, right?"
moments later
"I have forseen the end our times, and it is grotesque, bloated"
Me being very comfortable and homosexual in POP!_OS
Honestly even though POP!_OS isn't as advanced as Fedora, it's just so damn comfy to use I feel so spoiled.
Debian based but perhaps, Idk...
I wanna be coddled don't judge me (actually judge me all you want I like being judged). I use Nix for all my programming stuff anyway and system76 always includes the most up-to-date system components and kernel.
Debian-based more like Ubuntu but very
Arch user wants to be coddled I'll see about it, thing about a new OS is I tend to use the same drive so I testdrive my systems for a few months or whatever before just slamming a disto on.
You should check POP!_OS out when they fully release their new COSMIC desktop, they're the coolest people in the Linux space rn since they're so laser focused on delivering on the needs of their users since they're also a hardware company.
I have heard about this, aren't the Ubuntu devs like the worst kind of nerds though? Is pop now like a good fork of ubuntu sorta?
I do too much game modding to fully switch over currently, once I get a new system together I'll be dual booting windows 10 Enterprise LTSC with whatever flavour I feel like, may do fedora for a change from arch but we'll see, I like the aur but might move away from rolling distros.
It often is. Trachat has two modes: computer dork posting, and Seryph/Megan posting
i love to have a cult of personality
Honestly I don't see the windows 11 hate anymore, it's not that different from 10? But installing Linux is based you should do it.
10 was kinda bad enough but the UI is even worse, the AI integration upcoming is worrying, the internet setup shit is even more pervasive, they ruined the taskbar/system tray, bluetooth and even wired USB controller inputs are scuffed, it performs even more like ass, start menu bad, honeslty it just takes even longer to whip into decent shape than 10.
Dearest eggnog! Please suggest a linux distro you like!
getting in before any other tech literate trans woman does to say the line. install arch, you should run arch, btw did you know I run arch? (I do not, that shit is too complicated for me)
Installing arch:
>guide says check your network devices with a utility
>do so
>guide goes on to talk about some other thing meanwhile there's no way out of the network utility bar alt-f4
Genius, user friendly, idiot proof design. I installed openbsd with minimal issue but Arch itself is fucking stupid.
ctrl-C didn’t work?
who the fuck would think to use ctrl-c to exit a goddamn program? I tried esc, alt-f4, ctrl-x, (which exits terminal text editors in arch) no dice lol
ctrl-C in the terminal, unless it’s being overridden, sends SIGINT to the currently running program which typically causes it to close. It’s really useful for closing programs when you don’t know how to do it otherwise (like I don’t know if
ping
even has another way to close it) and when you use it on the command line it just discards what you’ve typed and drops you to a new prompt. Although text editors usually override it (like on nano (best editor) it just reports your cursor position and doesn’t send the SIGTERM). ctrl-Z also sends SIGTSTP which pauses the currently running program and moves it to the background and if you want to use it with nano (you do, it’s really convenient) you can just edit your nanorc file to enable suspension and map^Z
tosuspend
Side note, but a really common exit command is
q
, which is probably what the utility wantedI use nano, good editor...
So like where was I supposed to learn this? Arch wiki doesn't say any of this shit.
The Taskbar can be changed back, I haven't really experienced the other issues. I don't do much to my OS though.
I like mint/Ubuntu but I don't use it often enough unfortunately. I guess since most of what I do on it is hexbear, matrix, minecraft or stardew I could probably switch pretty easily 🤔 but eh, on some level I don't care much about it.
My self hosted shit is all Linux though, obviously.
Yeah I put 10explorer or whatever, Explorerpatcher but updates keep breaking it. It fuckin sucks.
My troubles are based, I like hooking up Wii U Pro Controllers and Dualshock 2s and using all kinds of weird old utilities for crusty old PC games from the XP and Vista era. Stardew and buttcraft are good on Linux, only like two of my ten PCs run Windoze at this point, but I wanna dualboot. Is apt-get still ugly? I have traumatic memories of trying to install tarballs...
Also I can't believe you are computers waow
I should check if updates have broken that for me too, probably.
Ooh, yea I haven't tried to connect anything like that. We'll I think I tried a wiiu controller on 10 but couldn't get it working, lol. I don't think so? I feel like I've been able to use it just fine but I never had a problem with it.
I suppose I haven't talked about computers much, but yes I am 😔 why do you have 10 computers?
Yeag, alas =)
WiiUnsoft is weird, it takes effort but the Wii U pro pad is so nice. I might try a debian based install again, might be time finally...
Incredible news, very nice I'm like a UXWBill or a Vwestlife, I have one modern laptop and one modern desktop, and then everything else I own is salvage. Curbsides, garbage containers, thrift stores, people dumping old "dead" computers on me. Mostly Core 2, Phenom, Phenom II and early Core-i stuff, my children I collect them like pokemon!!
Ooh, I might need to get the gamepad set up next time I'm in the mood for cemu. Do you use it for anything but wiiu stuff? Do it, I use debian for my server stuff!
That's very cool :) I need more old hardware in my life.
I'm a freak so I use it for absolutely anything I feel like, I played Asscreed Unity with it once. Probably good for DS games too, but if you're a sicko like me and use a pad for Minecraft, the way your thumb goes up to the right stick over the face buttons means mapping A to jump is very handy, can jump while still lookin around.
Thenkyew =) Yeah old computers kinda slap, handy to bust em out and test an operating system longterm, or use em for a NAS, anything really.
on principle I really hate the fact that they made the end of life for w10 NEXT YEAR to force people to update. that's what inspired me to finally get windows off my main machine. also my top of the line rig from 5 years ago won't even run it. AI stuff sucks ass too. never a better time to escape that shitty ecosystem imo. using windows feels like I'm renting my computer from msoft compared to Linux.
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC ends life in 2032 so dual booting that is always an option if anyone needs a windows 10 machine. I'm on a Zephyrus G14 atm with win 11 but when I get a desktop I'll be probably daily driving a dual boot system.
that is a good tip, thank you! I'll look into it if a use case pops up for sure
the problem with 11 is more the hardware demands, which are unreasonable and the OS does run fine on older machines, more telemetry invasiveness, and the further creeping of windows as a live serivce, all of which is after they'd said windows 10 was the final version of windows. the UI stuff is more than alterable with installing stuff on top to give you w/e start bar you want and all that, it's more the continued degrading of windows as a product
Idk I think it would scream if I put it on a mechanical drive... Otherwise though yeah exactly. Only like two devices in my entire house meet the TPM requirement, albeit I disabled it anyway.
I've been running endeavorOS on my laptop for a while and I prefer it to Manjaro, found it less prone to borking. it's arch based too if you're into that
Yeah I have endeavour installed on two machines, I like it but A) xfce start menu sucks vs manjaro B) the software acquisition is weird, you have to go look up package names and then punch em into yay? Call me filthy but I like pamac on manjaro.
oh I always use i3 on laptops so never had the xfce issue. you can use pacman just fine on endeavor, don't have to touch yay! once you get AUR setup in pacman yay is just an equivalent to that anyway right?
no
Frequently I find pamac will either not install itself or won't install anything, Idk what the issue is. People recommend against using it on endeavour, and some nerds flip out about graphical installers lol
ohhh pamac my bad. yeag on my laptop I just use pacman CLI for everything. I guess you're supposed to be able to install pamac from the AUR, but those issues do sound annoying. yeah lol I'm not a purist, I've been running Nobara on my PC and enjoying the convenience of the GUI package installer. on a laptop I like to avoid using the mouse so CLI is just fine
