its straight up xenophobia at this point, it has been for a while, but this is the most blatant it's gotten.

Remember when they were salivating at the thought of covid killing everyone in China?

Ah. Back in 2019, a substation in Bolivar had a transformer explode, causing rolling blackouts for the region.

Marco Rubio famously retweeted it was a "German Dam" but that turned out to be the name of the reporter writing about it.

I hadn't even heard about the Three Gorges Dam stuff. Thanks for the info.

Well it wasn't that unlikely it would hit land, however even if it hit land, humans only make up a tiny percentage of the surface and many don't realize this.

There's this article from a month ago where the exact same thing happened to SpaceX and people barely noticed. Skimming through it I found that the article actually lies about the possibility of debris from a Falcon 9 making it to the surface - the pressure vessels in those things are more than capable of surviving reentry, and in one case a fully intact one landed in Washington state.

Most rocket launches try to plan it out so that reentry is controlled, and I have no doubt that China tries to do that too, but a million things can and do go wrong even during successful launches and every time the Chinese space org fucks that particular thing up the western news descends on the story like a school of piranha. Add to that the fact that they have to launch from inland due to political concerns and the risk goes way up.

Yeah, this shit is kinda weird honestly. But I guess not a lot of people think about how like, the vast majority of rocket launches have just kinda dropped their shit with a reasonable assumption it won't hit land.

Yeah I'm not really seeing any xenophobia at least in I guess the social and media bubbles I'm in. It's just a fun water cooler ghost story like y2k or 2012.

Check out the reddit thread on it if you'd like to see the xenophobia.

In fairness, that could be said of just about any reddit thread on any topic.

Hang on now, sometimes it's just good old racism and bigotry.

It is very funny how everyone in that thread is suddenly an expert on deorbiting rocket stages and shit because it makes China look worse apparently.

Reddit is already the epitome of the Dunning-Kruger effect. It only gets worse once you sprinkle in some racism.

Perhaps the most perfectly succinct description of reddit I've heard.
