What was that stuff about being racist but instead of "race" saying "culture" so it's socially acceptable ?

Bonus from OP:

Not much we can do about that. It's just Chinese culture that hacking is a normal thing...their internet cafes literally comes pre-installed with hacks for online games because if the customers kept winning then they kept paying and renting PCs.

(no they don't, a couple years ago some twitter dipshit saw a computer in an internet cafe with a map tool that was approved by the game developer and thought it was a cheat)

I like how Chinese gamers are constantly getting around the great firewall to wreack havok in Western servers but the only evidence we have of this Uyghur genocide comes from exile orgs. By contrast with Palestine literally under siege with media offices being bombed and we still get interviews in the independent press.

for what it's worth Russians have similar views on cheating. Cheating for an advantage is fine as you don't get caught, and professors there expect some level of cheating on tests and such. I think it's just because history has caused Russians/Chinese/other peoples to have a more adversarial (and arguably more rational) relationship towards institutions than Americans, who still cheat but get all morally indignant about it because of puritan brain worms.

It's not an hour cheating to an hour revising though. It's 15 minutes cheating to about 5 hours of revision. And it's kinda fun lol, getting to one up the system. Don't think it should be encouraged, but fortune favours the brave and I don't think it should mean you're seen as a bad person or whatever.

I'll admit I sometimes get that way. I swing between "we will not see capitalism fall before the planet dies" and "China will save us all within 5 years" when I'm at a high or low point. I know neither is necessarily true.

It's also selection bias. China is verrrry picky about who it lets in its country. You won't find any trailer trash there, for instance. You have to be college educated and have a clean criminal record. The worst they get are chuds from US or Pakistan who view China as some kind of paradise for hurting women's feelings.

It's also how few foreigners there are in China outside the major cities. The western foreigners are often very xenophilic as well, despising their own countries and looking to China as being a better place because all the deplorables and racists aren't there. So the Chinese are charmed that a foreigner wants to learn tea ceremony and the foreigner is delighted that someone will take the time to teach her.

In theory yes. In practice, less so. There's a lot of things immigration can't independently verify, like the authenticity of college diplomas.

I overheard more than one conversation on public transport between English "teachers" talking about how they submitted false documents or lied about their criminal records.

Oh, they don't do that any more. All diplomas verified with the host institution. And if you have so much as a DWI or shoplifting conviction, they don't let you in. FBI records check required. And if you get caught in any shenanigans they deport your ass in an instant. It does wonders for the population.

I am Chinese and I can say that this is unfortunately a true stereotype even among Chinese people.

A global survey about trust places China consistently as one of the most trusting countries on the planet, at least by the survey's metric.

For what it's worth I've heard the same stereotype from people around me but anecdotally it seems to be more prevalent older generations.

If you have a master's or PHd, you can find a university easily. You won't be taken seriously though because you don't speak Chinese. They'll have staff meetings and not invite you. You're kind of like an exotic pet. They like having you to show off. As long as you do your own thing and ignore the school, you'll be fine.

Hahahaha. Few foreigners in China ever bother to learn Chinese. Just to become conversational is a huge effort, and to speak the language at an academic level? It would take years.

I suppose they might start taking you seriously, but then you'd have to deal with the idiocy of their bureaucracy. Sometimes being ignorant is the best choice.

"Chinese" people don't view other "Chinese" people as part of their ingroup. Thus they may be freely cheated, ripped off, etc. Your ingroup is only your hometown's people, and you can tell right away who's who because you have your own private language.

There are just too many people in China. Not enough to go around. Take care of you and yours first.

it's a Pink people thing. They did the same with "ethnic", where the logical conclusion is that europeans inherently don't have an ethnicity--because they're not "ethnic"

I've unironically said this before and their stuttering reactions are amazing lmao.

"culture" is just the new euphemism for "ethnic". You could have a rainbow of people who all grew up in the same town, same school, and Pink libs would talk about "dating people of different cultures", because the word race/ethnicity is just doubleplusbad to them

You'd be surprised tbh. In the USA and Britain, the people are so cucked that they don't even dare to cheat. I was a compulsive cheater because I hated most of the subjects I did, and passed school with the top grades possible, because cheating was so out of the realm of imagination for so many people that no one ever did a good job of checking for cheaters. When I tell friends that I cheated now they all say 'ooh I wouldn't have the guts' or 'whats the point in cheating, you're only cheating yourself'. No lol, I'm giving myself free time to do the shit I want to do, and the odds of getting caught if you have a brain larger than a walnut are super low.

And it's not just me who thinks this. I've got family members who started off teaching in non western countries, who came to the west eventually. They'd leave the classroom expecting students to cheat - even wanting them to - and found that people didn't do it all that much.

This is all purely anecdotal but I think the west are so cucked to authority and the system that they don't even cheat that much at a school level.

I didn't typically cheat at all, except for one time I REALLY cheated.

We had an awful, racist Japanese teacher from Japan who would freely tell the various Japanese kids at my school, in Japanese, that he thought Chinese people were dirty and Koreans were stupid. And he treated all of his students like 6 year olds. There's kind of a racial chauvinism still somewhat present in parts of Japanese culture related to the ability to speak their language. "Barbarian" vibes.

Once someone noticed a folder on his desktop called Final. He was a dipshit too.

A week later he left the room for a minute or two, and they opened up his laptop, stuck a USB drive in it, and copied the final exam to it.

We weren't sure what the kid was doing at the time.

The word got out. I didn't want it.

But then we all found out about our final exam study guide we had been hammering on for months. It was this huge compilation of roughly 90% of what we had learned. He would constantly remind us to study the final exam guide, because it had everything we needed to know.

We would even study the thing in a few "Final Prep" lessons.

The kid who stole the file revealed that the Study Guide and the Final Exam had literally no crossover whatsoever - the teacher had gone through every lesson in our textbooks and separated every word and kanji into two separate buckets- the Final Exam and the Study Guide.

We couldn't believe that rat fucking bastard.

My friend smuggled me a copy in his shoe, and I studied that fucking exam. 80% of the class was in on it, and we all got A+ grades on it.

This was the type of teacher that would penalize us for good performance by making the next test harder.

So all walked out of the final exam, huddled around, and agreed on the spot to stop doing Japanese next year. Some kids didn't need any more language, and a few did French.

I was at a fancy British school, yeah, most people cheat in low stakes, but I'm talking about when the stakes are standardized nationwide tests, where if you get caught you're banned from all forms of public examination for 2-3 years. No one that I know properly cheated - maybe a maths formula on the inside of their sleeve here and there.

These kids have a safety net so it's no biggie if they fuck up really. On the other hand I'd get kicked out the school if my grades weren't tip top all the time (cos I was on a fat bursary under the stipulation that I do good or I fuck off), and don't have much of a net.

As a person who grew up in a country with culture that closely resemble China, from my experience, I can say that cheating in class is a common thing (at least in the city). It's frowned upon by teachers ofc, and if you get caught you're punished. But between students, especially people who struggle in class, talking about way to cheat before exam is not strange at all . The good students still gonna try to study hard for it, but even for a lot of them if an opportunity present itself, they gonna take it to cheat a little bit if they're struggling with or unsure about question (such as by double-checking the answer with another person). The level of cheating depends upon how important the exam is, how strict the proctors are, the level of the students,... but I think the biggest cause of it is because of society and especially parent's expectations toward student to perform well academically. Lots of parent hold view that in order to succeed, for their children to have a good future they need to do well at school (this is why parents are willing, even parents who are not that well-off, to spend money for their children to get taught by private tutor/go to cram school, a very common thing here) and part of it is also not to lose face with their relative/neighbors, this cause parents to have expectations that their children couldn't fulfill, which cause the parents to lash out by scolding, beating,... In order to stop that, either the children gonna try hard to study or they gonna cheat (most of them still gonna try to study to some degree tho). This attitude toward cheating for most of the school life end up influencing them when they grow up and enter society too.

As for cheating in a game, it's also super common, and lots of gaming cafe/pc bang do come with pre-installed hack tools. The reason for that I think is because they want to have as much fun as possible in the short period of times that their allowance and their free times from school and cram school afford them to spend in PC bang. They don't have the times and the money to spend hours practicing at a game, unless you're from a well to do family and parents that aren't strict about how much times you spend playing or you skip school.

This is of course only from my personal experience, and there are exceptions, and also maybe China is much different from my country than expected.

I had a lot of Chinese exchange students at my high school, and every year there would be a big crisis thing where freshmen would turn in the same paper or whatever, and think it was normal. Could have been selective reporting in the rumor mill, but it seemed like they just thought doing the assignment was the point of it all, or something.

It seems like the US has pro-power brainworms where those people are forgiven for cheating, because as rich people they are just better than us and above our petty rules. Meanwhile poor people and minorities who cheat to survive are demonized. China might just not have that stratification.
