my parents didn't even take a mortgage on their first house, they literally wrote a check for it after working for a year
The absolute high point of capitalist profitability. Made possible by massive intervention and direct central planning during WW2 and all that dead capital being literally blown up. It was all down hill from there.
Nope sorry everything's gotta look clean and smooth under the hood just like the interior, no visible screws or bolts, you open the hood and there's just a big piece of plastic over the engine that says "fuck you"
Literally me frantically reading through web forums and a Chilton's manual trying to figure out how to change the lower intake manifold gasket on a mid-90's Mopar 3.5L in my old Chrysler, because ODB codes kept flagging a misfiring cylinder in a spot that was known to the Intrepid owner community to be prone to the gasket rotting out and corroding the manifold mounting bolts until the lower intake wouldn't seal against the block anymore, hence the misfires. It would also seep coolant into places where it really wasn't supposed to be.
That devolved into buying lots of fun shit, including new bolts, a bolt removal kit for getting one of the old ones out, a torque wrench, storage containers for all of the antifreeze that I had to drain out, and so on. I managed to do it, and used no duct tape in the process, though I think I might have had some extra-wide painter's tape covering the holes in the block at one point so that I could keep metal shavings from that stuck bolt out of there... The surprising part is that the engine ran fine for another 8 or 9 years after that.
Then again, I grew up around shadetree mechanics, even though I was never really a "car guy."
If only there was an example of republics in a Union of different socialist states where rent was made 3% of your income a month.
All labor is remunerated at fair rates with 30% going to room and board. 1-4 years (depending on circumstances of reaction). 6 hours labor, 3 hours school every day, weekends off, and spent with family after the first year.
Watch the landlords complain about having to pay board lol
But for real though, this seems like a fairly reasonable arrangement. Thanks for the link. gonna read it later today :stalin-heart:
The plan progressivo is a legitimate prison reform program. Seems like even HRW and Amnesty thought it was good from that article.
Uf da. Fixing your own shitbox is also rapidly disappearing as an option for many. You need tools, a garage, and time.
My apartment has like a $500 fine to do anything other than emergency repairs, but the local oreillys lends you tools and lets you work in their parking lot so ig that works
lol on my apartment hunt, at one complex they all had garages attached, but you had to pay an extra $150 /month to use them.. I guess they lock them and leave them vacant otherwise? really stupid
Working on your car in the street is illegal in my city. It doesn't stop most folks, but Jesus that's such a huge middle finger to renters.
Edit: that's a lie. I looked it up and I'm talking out my ass just parroting what a neighbor told me years ago.
Yep. I can't imagine owning a car newer than 2000. Ripping out the computer and installing a carburetor should at least be an option.
Ngl would rather have the LS than the 350, but the 350 ain't that bad.
Lmao imagine having a broken shitbox wouldn't be me fam like seriously just eat some BEANS
:bean:
I'm lucky enough to have the combination of a late 90s car and a stepdad who's a very skilled and knowledgeable mechanic.
If I didn't have 1 or the other, I'd be fucked.
me at my age
to be accurate, should be in the same fucking house lol
Get a bluetooth OPD2 code reader for $20, and an app called torque. It will read the code and tell you whats wrong. You can google how to fix it.
Or you can use it to clear the code and drive in ingnorant bliss for 100 kms or so.
it aint easy, it's a shit spot. But it's a useful skill to have while we still can fix the things.
Like my parents always said "you cant do drugs, but you sure as hell can sell them"
As a pizza delivery man, yes. I changed my oil once a month and basically never turned my car off unless I knew I was gonna be sitting for a while. Start it up a few minutes before you leave for work, run the A/C, maybe give it a bit if gas in park/neutral to get everything up to temp.
Stop and go is the worst. I and most drivers I know learn the traffic patterns ant take the routes that avoid traffic or have predictable lights. At night, if you have good vision, it's sometimes better to run reds if you have to than slam on your brakes. It sucks that basically the only way you can get life or efficiency out of modern vehicles (anything after 1960) is at highways speeds.
Im not saying you're doing this but I knew a guy at work that would shift to neutral at the top of hills and then back to drive at the bottom. He went through a couple transmissions, lol.
I’d love for someone to tell me what the fuck I’m doing wrong.
Buying Chrysler Corp. products?
Big reason I never bought a house is because I've never had stable employment. What's the point in dropping five figures on a down payment (not that I could afford that) when I might have to move in a year because my contract dropped me and my next job offer after months of searching is in another state?
Who would win?
Highly precisioned and machined aluminum blocks built to contain millions of tiny little explosions over it’s lifetime.
One little cardboard boi?
I feel this. My shitbox needs a catalytic converter and a fuel pump (collectively worth more than the shitbox).
Mid 2000s Honda. We caught someone trying a few months ago and they succeeded the second time around we're guessing.
I just wanna live in a city where I can walk or take a bus.
That sucks - if your state/locality doesn't have emissions checks you might be able to just replace the pipe and not the catalytic though - test pipes/catless downpipes look like they're a bit cheaper, but you'll have a louder exhaust
No, clogged because a misfiring cylinder was throwing unburned fuel into it for who knows how long without the check engine light coming on.
