I don't really get this one. Slave is a word. There's been slaves since the beginning of time. The word itself has a meaning. Idk, seems odd to censor it. I guess there's no harm in changing it though.

isn't the point though that like, Boba Fett is a bounty hunter and a bad guy? like, I thought the name of his ship was supposed to make it obvious he's the bad guy

They are sanitazing mr. bounty hunter ship's for his upcoming show. Despite his profession and his main contractor were a fascist empire (who kept slaves).

They aren't though. They are changing the toy packaging name. They have done it before, Luke's X-wing is "Red Five" but the Lego sets just say "Luke's x-wing" etc. They just dont want the word slave on products

It wasn't. They just went with the name that would sell better. People buying legos for their kids know Luke Skywalker, they don't know the designation of his x-wing

Probably just a marketing move. "Luke's X-wing" will sell more.

Watto's still going to come across as vaguely Antisemitic tho - it is a Disney movie after all.

Though I'm perfectly fine using other words, there was a similar move away from master/slave in tech last year.

Why was it called Slave-1 in the first place? Was Bobba Fett a slave trader? Kinda on the nose to name your ship after your main commodity.

Jango Fett was a Mandalorian bounty hunter. He stole a ship to bust out of prison, and named it Slave I. It is not clear why, that's just the name he picked. He later sold his DNA to the clone slavers to be used as the basis for the clone army. As part of his payment, they created an unaltered clone of himself to raise as a son, who he named Boba. Boba inherited the ship after his father died, and also became a bounty hunter. Neither of them were slavers.

The John Boyega poster controversy always seemed like an exercise in projecting American culture onto other places to me.

If you look at the poster it also cuts out Poe Dameron, R2, and C3PO completely. What's the conclusion from that then? Chinese people also hate Guatemalans and... robots? Well shit it can't be robots because they enlarged BB8 in their place so... Chinese people hate non-round robots?

I feel like outside of the Millennium Falcon most Lego Star Wars ships have switched to being called "X's ship" since most ship names aren't used in anything other than supplementary material. Would not surprise me if this had been the chase for a while but this one got picked up by media companies trying to cash in on some quick nerd outrage.
