In a literal sense, too, considering how part of growing through adolescence is figuring out your identity, which often involves going thru phases of different identities and outwardly signaling one's chosen identity to see how others react.

Insightful. I would say that's the biggest difference I feel between my teenage self and my current self. I have a much clearer idea about who I am and who I want to be.

Reddit socialism and anarchism subs are literally all co-opted. You can't convince me otherwise. It's the least the US would do against growing socialism and chinese sympathy within its borders. And seeing they all parot literal state propaganda makes it even more sus.

I talk about the same shit we talk about on here but in person at work with anyone any chance I get, and I gotta say it's just deeply culturally ingrained. It's not even an op at this point (though it is the result of decades of shit like COINTELPRO). Americans by and large repeat and perpetuate anti-communist bullshit completely unaware and uncaring of its origins. We are so deeply indoctrinated that they don't even need to run active psyops.

My favorite was a self proclaimed Trotskyist who also thought Lenin was too "violent" lol. Very very very few people in the US have anything close to resembling a coherent political worldview.

One of the most important factors in me becoming a leftist was my weird obsession with Austro-Hungaria and the Byzantine Empire. No, I'm, not kidding. I learned about how much Russia sucked under the Czars as compared to other monarchies, so without even questioning or doubting US propaganda, I came to the conclusion Russians and other Eastern European people were better off, or at least just as well off, under communism(as I was told it was at the time) as they were before. I also was aware that the US was just in a better area resources and crop wise, so it made sense we were materially better off. I got made fun of in history classes for pointing this out, but no one could ever actually address my arguments. A bunch of other things happened too, but the underpinnings of the most basic propaganda not making sense historically or materially was vital.

Reading threads like that one makes me believe there isn't a single actual anarchist or communist left on reddit, it's all just libs and socdems who call themselves AnComs because they bought an Anti-Flag album 15 years ago.

I usually use it just for hobby subreddits these days, but I'm still subbed to a bunch of "leftist" subreddits that I was subbed to before chapo got banned. Most of them pivoted so fast to being "anti-tankie" it's kind of disgusting.

I actually became more “tankie” from questioning WHY I was skeptical of western media and liberalism. I originally was on board condemning China for Hong Kong and the Uighur situation not so long ago but after seeing HK protestors wave the US and UK flag I became extremely jaded and sought out my own information. I didn’t even know any socialist sources so I only looked at mainstream western sources. Eventually I came across pictures of HK protestors meeting with US ambassadors and politicians - some of them were republicans - and thought it was totally bullshit.

If you are very naive and detached from reality and history you could even make a devil's argument about the US image as "world police" and how maybe getting their attention is the best way to get things to happen even if the outcome is uncertain, roll the accelerationism dice etc. It is a shit argument but you could make it.

      But then you see this.

Hong Kong Protesters Love Pepe the Frog. No, They’re Not Alt-Right.

Your favorite lib news source making excuses for why an alt-right symbol isn't an alt-right symbol. US flags alone could fool someone naive enough, but a very online specific, western specific alt-right symbol should be enough to prove there is nothing organic or left-wing about those protests.

Almost exclusively. I have plenty of socialist friends who don't support North Korea, but they at least acknowledge the other side of the argument. It's the Reddit nerds who refuse to even engage with the idea of critical support. We need to find better methods of convincing these dorks to read more theory.

We need to find better methods of convincing these dorks to read more theory.

You have to start somewhere like Bolivia, Venezuela, or Cuba (probably in that order). Show them how consent gets manufactured against some country they might be open to looking at fresh.

From there, it's a matter of "if you were lied to about this, what else were you lied to about?" on progressively more demonized countries. Leaving open the door for agnosticism helps, too -- i.e., "I'm not really sure what the DPRK is up to, but I'm pretty confident most of mainstream coverage of it is biased to the point it's useless."

This is also the only way to make it out of some conversations alive, by being agnostic about your support for communism.

Anarchists have worked with MLs in the past and will again in the future, if we all facilitate it. Not all anarchists are adamant that the state must be abolished immediately otherwise we're mortal enemies. Obviously we'd prefer a revolution which does do that, but if that's not the revolution that's happening then I, along with plenty of others, will be perfectly ready to contribute to whatever is happening. Even if it's flawed, even if it's not exactly what I want.

The point at which it grows dangerous is when anarchists who gladly took part in the creation of something they saw as sub-optimal are left out of the discussion moving forward, disrespected and discarded. That's where the violence breaks out and no one wins that.

We resolve it by fostering actual unity, by treating each other as equals through ideological and strategic disagreements and forming the sorts of bonds which will withstand those disagreements. I don't think there's that much more difference between anarchists and MLs as general categories than between plenty of ML sub-categories, and likewise we have seen plenty of disagreement and sectarian violence among MLs. If you think you can unite MLs as a single force working in unison, then I don't see any reason you shouldn't also be able to unite MLs and anarchists.

The other approach I've heard people talk about before is simply not uniting at all. And not even trying. Let MLs organize together, let anarchists handle themselves. The two groups are allied with one another but distinctly separate. I can see the logic behind this, but I think that alliance would break apart all too easily.

They have a bot that spams every post with specifically anti-tankie subs. Their purity complex is so great that they had to create an alternative to r/leftistvexillology, a sub that is already majority anarchist, because it is pro leftist unity.

Edit: lol they also made their own version of r/greenandpleasant, because apparently Corbin is too authoritarian for them.
